VESome of the most costly container losses in maritime history have happened far from land, where nature quickly takes control. In 2013, the giant container ship MOL Comfort snapped in two in the Indian Ocean while carrying thousands of containers loaded with cars, electronics, machinery, and consumer goods. The vessel eventually sank, taking more than 4,000 containers with it and causing losses estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars—one of the largest container-related disasters ever recorded.
A similar shock followed in 2020 when the ONE Apus was battered by powerful storms in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in nearly 2,000 containers being lost or damaged. Everything from luxury items to industrial equipment was swept into the sea, with some cargo later appearing on distant beaches months afterward. Beyond the immediate cargo loss, these incidents triggered massive insurance claims, cleanup efforts, and global supply chain disruptions. Together, they show how fragile modern shipping can be, and how the ocean remains a force capable of turning even the largest ships into long-term hazards for navigation and the environment 🌊.

DOMeet “Scarback”, a true icon of a whale! Scarback once belonged to the Western Pacific Gray Whale population off Russia, where it’s believed she was struck by an exploding harpoon from Russian whalers in the 1980s. Miraculously, Scarback not only survived, but she was able to cross the Pacific Ocean and join a small group of gray whales that feed off the Oregon coastline known as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group.
We encountered her on a recent tour with @gonewhalewatching, where we are happy to report she’s looking nice and healthy as she makes her migration south towards her winter breeding grounds off the coast of Mexico! Scarback has been able to produce several calves over the years since her injury, and her scar is a reminder of how resilient these animals can be when given a chance!

LIImagine sipping your coffee at 24,000 feet. You are looking out the window at the Pacific Ocean. Suddenly, the roof above you vanishes. The blue sky rushes in at -45 degrees. The wind screams at 300 mph.
This isn’t a movie scene. This was the terrifying reality for 89 passengers on board Aloha Airlines Flight 243 on April 28, 1988.
THE HIDDEN ENEMY: CYCLES The Boeing 737-200, named “Queen Liliuokalani,” had spent 19 years hopping between the Hawaiian islands. These short, salty hops meant constant pressurization and depressurization—over 89,000 cycles in total. That is more than twice the number of flight cycles the airframe was originally designed to endure. Hidden beneath the white paint, microscopic corrosion (likely from the humid salt air) was eating away at the lap joints. The metal was literally tired.
THE THREAD Here is the most terrifying detail: The only thing keeping the nose of the plane attached to the rest of the body were the floor beams. The passenger floor was the only structural connection left. As they approached Maui, the nose actually began to droop downwards by several feet. If the pilots had pulled back too hard on the yoke? Snap. If they landed too hard? Snap.
They performed a miracle landing on Runway 02 at Kahului Airport. When they touched down, the nose gear light hadn’t even turned on. They were landing blind, praying the wheels were locked. They were.
This disaster changed aviation history forever. It forced the entire industry to rethink “aging aircraft” and overhauled maintenance inspections for high-cycle jets. Every time you fly safely today, you owe a small debt to the lessons learned from the convertible jet.
