XAThe question sounds simple. Padparadscha or Paraiba, which one will explode in value over the next decade?
But it's not a simple question. And the moment you ask it that way, you've already revealed the gap in knowledge that determines whether you make money or lose it in this market.
Because there is no single padparadscha market. There is Sri Lanka padparadscha and Madagascar padparadscha. Both can carry the name on a certificate. The prices are not the same. Sri Lanka commands a premium that has nothing to do with the stone's visual appearance. It comes from provenance, from history, from the relationship between that specific geological origin and the collectors and houses who have been paying for it for decades.
The same logic applies to Paraiba tourmaline, except the gap between origins is even more extreme. Mozambique Paraiba exists in meaningful quantities. You can find large stones, clean material, real supply. Brazilian Paraiba is functionally extinct from the mine. What comes to market now is what already exists, already cut, already in private hands. The original deposits in Brazil are essentially depleted. Finding Brazilian Paraiba above one carat in top color and clarity is an event, not a transaction.
That's the answer. If you have a Brazilian Paraiba tourmaline in the right neon blue, in the right clarity, from the right origin with the right documentation, that stone will not simply appreciate. The market underneath it will move structurally upward as the last available material gets absorbed into collections that don't release it.
Mozambique Paraiba in ideal color, the specific copper-bearing neon saturation that defines the category, is already difficult to source. As the best material gets acquired, even Mozambique supply tightens at the top end.
The question wasn't which category. The question was always which version of each stone. And if you can't answer that before you buy, you're navigating without a map.
