RAIt’s been a long time, but since I’m teaching the Color Class this weekend (tickets still available! Link in my bio), it seemed like a good opportunity to revive Mystery Palette Mondays. This one features QoR Sap Green, Daniel Smith Transparent Pyrrol Orange, and QoR Manganese Blue. I decided to pull two paints out of the yellow bag when I got a green, and ended up with the orange!

CAA quick video of our newly acquired Duncan Grant painting of Cassis from 1930; it’s an explosion of Mediterranean colour and heat, captured in oil paint from the garden of the house being rented by Grant along with other members of the Bloomsbury Group, as they did during the 1920s and early 1930s. A fabulous painting.

REA Secret of the Old Masters About Color
One of the most important principles used by classical painters was this:
Great painters rarely used colors straight from the tube.
Instead, they would mix a small amount of the complementary color into the paint. This simple adjustment reduces the artificial brightness of modern pigments and creates colors that feel more natural and harmonious.
For example:
• Add a touch of green to soften a strong red
• Add a little orange to calm an intense blue
• Add a hint of violet to balance a bright yellow
This technique lowers the chroma (intensity) of the color without turning it into dull mud. The result is what painters often call a “luminous gray” — a color that appears subtle, rich, and full of life.
Many classical painters also reinforced this harmony through traditional methods such as:
• Grisaille – building the painting first in values before adding color
• Limited palettes – working with only a few pigments to unify the painting
• Complementary mixing – controlling color intensity for natural light
Nature is rarely made of pure colors.
The Old Masters understood that beauty in painting often lies in controlled color, not raw color.
Old Master rule:
The most beautiful colors are often slightly neutralized.
