Pando, also known as the “Trembling Giant,” is a massive aspen clone in Utah, recognized as the world’s largest single living organism. It’s not a single tree, but rather a colony of over 47,000 genetically identical trees (or stems) connected by a vast underground root system. This interconnectedness is why it’s considered a single organism. Pando spans 106 acres and is estimated to weigh 13 million pounds, making it the heaviest known organism on Earth. It has been estimated to be at least 80,000 years old. Yes, Pando is widely considered to be the largest living organism on Earth. It’s a clonal colony of quaking aspen trees in Utah, connected by a massive underground root system. This interconnected network of stems, all genetically identical, forms a single, unified organism. While it appears as a forest of individual trees, Pando’s shared root system makes it a single, massive entity.

This is the largest, most dense organism ever found weighing in at nearly 13 million pounds.
It’s called Pando which is latin for “I spread” and It’s an aspen clone grove.
All the trees in the grove are genetically identical and originate from a single parent tree, making the entire grove essentially one massive organism connected through an extensive underground root system.
Estimated to have started at the end of the last ice age, the clone spreads over 106 acres, consisting of over 40,000 individual trees. Some of the sprouts are over 130 years old.
You can find it at Fishlake National Forest in central Utah where you can hear the leaves quake and admire the breathtaking display of golden foliage during the fall season. Worth noting, while Pando is often referred to as the largest organism, there is some debate about this claim, as a massive fungus in Oregon known as Armillaria ostoyae also contends for the title. This quaking aspen grove at Fishlake National Forest is the largest single organism clone in the world! - It is named Pando, the Latin word for “I spread.” - It is about 47,000 stems that appear to be individual trees but are not. The stems are connected by a root system that spans 106 acres. - Pando is the world’s largest tree by weight and landmass and is 9,000 to 16,000 years old. - However, its future sustainability is uncertain as threats such as grazing, fire suppression, and drought. - One positive development: It is now protected by fencing. - I was lucky enough to catch it during peak fall colors. - It took a lot of research to time it just right! - #nationalforest #pando #Utah #natgeoyourshot #natgeo #nationalparks #visitutah

You know what’s creepy in a fun way? Aspens aren’t forests — they’re clone armies. Out in Fishlake National Forest in Utah there’s a hillside of golden aspens called Pando, and it looks like a normal grove… until you realize every tree you’re looking at is actually the same tree. Roughly 47,000 stems, all connected underground by one enormous root system. Altogether it weighs an estimated 13 million pounds, making Pando not just the largest aspen grove ever discovered, but the largest living organism on Earth. Pando is the name given for a particular clonal grove of aspen trees in southern Utah. While calling it a grove of trees is technically correct, it's actually one organism that is genetically identical, and therefore really one tree. This has been verified by genetic testing, showing that all of the thousands of stems of this particular clone are the same even though it looks like an entire aspen forest. This makes Pando the largest tree on Earth when measured this way, covering 106 acres, having 40,000 or so trunks, spanning about 2/3 of a mile / 1 km in length, and weighing an estimated 13.2 million pounds. In fact it becomes the largest known single organism on Earth in terms of biomass. By comparison, this biomass is approximately three times heavier than the second largest known single organism which is the General Sherman Sequoia tree in California which is the largest and heaviest single-trunk tree on Earth. . This aspen was identified in 1976 and given further study, with the name Pando becoming applied in 1993. Pando is Latin for "I spread". Pando is thought to have germinated as a single small seed somewhere between 8,000 and 12,000 years ago, which also makes it extremely ancient even though individual trunks of the Aspen above ground tend not to live for more than about 100 to 150 years at the most. But the rootstock beneath the ground has lived for a minimum of 8,000 years, which once again is towards the top end of age known for any clonal organism. I have wanted to go see Pando for years and made my pilgrimage in the autumn to catch it in full golden color. What a privilege! . . #Pando #PandoAspenGrove #UtahFlora #PandoClone

The Pando Clone, located in Utah’s Fishlake National Forest, is an immense aspen grove recognized in 1992 as the largest known living organism on Earth. This grove consists of mature aspen trees interconnected by a common root system and sharing the same genetic makeup. For years, the Pando Clone, along with other aspen groves in the Western United States, has been experiencing a decline, with older trees dying and a lack of new saplings to take their place. In response, the U.S. Forest Service has implemented measures to preserve part of the Pando Clone from animal grazing. They erected protective fencing to shield it from mule deer and cattle, which feed on the young shoots, and carried out selective vegetation management. These actions have led to successful aspen regrowth within the protected areas, regardless of whether they received additional treatment. However, outside these enclosures, particularly on lands leased for livestock grazing, the Pando Clone continues to suffer from lack of regeneration and ongoing die-off, a trend also seen in other nearby aspen groves. The Western Watersheds Project launched a year-long study to monitor wildlife activity in the region, using motion-activated cameras to track and quantify the presence of both domestic cattle and mule deer throughout the 2018 growing season. The data revealed that cattle grazing accounted for 4.5 times more plant consumption in just two weeks than that by mule deer over six months. Before cattle were introduced to the area, mule deer grazing was minimal and had little impact on the vegetation. However, once cattle grazing began, between 70 to 90 percent of the year’s plant growth was consumed in just two weeks, combining the effects of both cattle and mule deer. #pandoclone #aspentrees #conservation #utahwild

If you’ve walked through an aspen grove, then you’ve met a clone. Let us explain. The Pando Aspen Clone on the Fishlake National Forest is the world’s largest, most dense organism to ever exist. Weighing in at 13 million pounds, the collective root system of these 40,000 aspen trees is believed to have been born from a single seed at the end of the last ice age (about 2.6 million years ago!) One aspen tree is only a small part of a larger organism. A stand or group of aspen trees is considered a singular organism with the main life force underground in the extensive root system. Before a single aspen trunk appears above the surface, the root system may lie dormant for many years until the conditions are just right, including sufficient sunlight. In a single stand, each tree is a genetic replicate of the other — hence the name a “clone” of aspens is used to describe a stand. #aspens #pandoaspenclone #fallfoliage #fallcolors #leafpeeping #bobsburger

Interesting facts about those beautiful aspen trees... #visitcolorado #viewcolorado #outtherecolorado 👴🏾Most Aspen trees live only for 150 years, but may persist for 200 years 🔥 Quaking Aspens regularly polanize in burn areas throughout the central rocky mountains. 🍂 Quaking Aspens get their name due to the shape of their leaves and with the slightest breeze... they make a quake or trembling noise. Have you ever heard this unique sound? 🗺️ Most of the Aspen forests in the U.S. are found within Colorado and Utah, so it’s okay if you travel over to Utah to check them out too. 🐋 The Pando Clone (located in Utah) is the largest single living Aspen organism on the planet. It is over 100 acres in size, weighing in at a mere 14 million pounds (40 times the size of the Blue Whale). It has been aged at 80,00 years old and slowly, it’s dying... Human interference was named as the primary cause... (via USDA.gov) The Forest Service is currently experimenting with several 5-acre sections of it in an effort to find a means to save it. Tread lightly out there... and please stop carving in our Aspen trees. 🍂
