Most people prune smooth hydrangeas WRONG… here’s what actually works 👀 I cut mine back HARD every early spring (about 6 inches) and they come back bigger and fuller every year 🌸 Don’t be scared to prune them — they actually LOVE it. I also use a simple fertilizer that makes a huge difference in how full they grow. 👇 Comment “LINK” and I’ll send you my full hydrangea care guide + everything I use (Canada & US) Save this so you remember what to do each spring 📌 IMPORTANT! These types are for Smooth hydrangeas!! DO NOT do this to your big leaf macrophylla hydrangeas. Bought these ones from @terraathome and they are from @provenwinners

Panicle hydrangea pruning can really make or break the plant, and I’ve learned over time that the less pruning you do, the better the plant is. In the end, this plant would never be pruned in nature anyways 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m excited to work on these trees and make them better for next year! #limelight #hydrangea #hydrangeatree #hydrangeapruning

Top 3 mistakes to avoid if you want show stopping hydrangeas!! 👇🏻 SAVE this post and follow @fidlinaroundhome for more home + garden tips + inspo 💙 🪴 Improper Pruning: Different types of hydrangeas require different types of pruning! For example, bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so prune after they finish flowering. However, panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood and should be pruned in late winter or early spring! 💦 Incorrect Watering: Hydrangeas need really moist soil, especially in their first year of growth. But overwatering (or not watering enough) can both cause stress to the plant. SO! Aim for deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow, frequent watering to encourage strong root development 🙌🏻 ☀️ Wrong Plant Location: Hydrangeas need the right balance of sunlight and shade to thrive. Too much sun can scorch the leaves, while too much shade can reduce blooming, SO plant hydrangeas where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade Are you making any of these mistakes?! Tell me below how your hydrangeas are doing!! Happy growing!! 💦☀️🪴 #hydrangeaseason #hydrangeasofinstagram #hydrangeaflower

Panicle Hydrangea Pruning! Early spring is the best time to prune, panical hydrangeas. this particular hydrangea blooms the latest out of all of my hydrangeas so I am pruning it tomorrow. my incrediball hydrangeas bloom in late June so they get bumped to the front of the line always it's pretty dramatic on these, and the recommended amount is typically closer to 1/3 of the shrub. I have a full video on my longform channel if you want to check out in depth and another short, a few posts back showing more close-up information as well this time of year is great to prune them because you can see the little nodes start to turn green and leave out so it's easier to visualize your cuts Utah is warming up faster than previous years so everything is a little bit ahead of schedule so make sure you get these guys pruned but honestly, you won't hurt the shrub if you don't it just makes pest and fungus control easier in the summertime because you will have better airflow between the leaves and branches by thinning it out like this hope that helps! Hit me up in the comments if you have any questions ⚠️PLEASE BE SURE you know which type of hydrangea you have before pruning!!! Some do not need to be pruned at all. This is a “panicle” variety that does very well with the challenges here in the full sun high desert Utah Intermountain West 7a. 👏 hydrangea, hydrangea, pruning, hydrangea, queen, spring garden, beginner gardening, Utah garden, Colorado garden,

There’s more than one way to prune a Hydrangea paniculata (the ice cream hydrangea!) 🍦 They bloom on new growth, which means they’re very forgiving when it comes to pruning. There’s general rule: a harder prune = bigger but fewer flowers. 🌿 1. Light Prune (Lazy Prune) Simply cut just below the old flower heads. Produces lots of smaller blooms and creates a taller, natural-looking plant. You’ll get around 40 flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 2. Medium Prune (Balanced Option) Cut stems to about 40 cm above the ground. Produces medium-sized blooms with strong stems. A great middle ground used by many nurseries. It’ll give you about 30 flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 3. Hard Prune (Brave Cut) Cut stems down to about 20 cm above the ground. Results in fewer but very large flower heads. Keeps plants compact and structured. You’ll get about 20 giant flowers on a mature plant. 🌿 4. Don’t Prune at All (The Easiest Option!) Leave the plant completely untouched.. You’ll get smaller flowers, but still plenty of them. Plants grow taller and more tree-like with gnarly branches, which is quite sexy! Flowering may also start earlier, giving a very natural look. Best time to prune: Late winter to early spring before new growth appears (NOW!!) Awesome advice from @living.creations and @schoemaker.alex 🍦

My top tips for pruning Paniculata (panicle) hydrangeas! 1. Prune panicle hydrangeas between full dormancy (consistently under 32°) and early spring 2. Don’t take back more than 1/3 of the plant per season 3. Use the 2-4 bud method to make cuts. Find the strongest growth from last year and count 2-4 bud up and make the pruning cut directly above that bud. 4. Cut out any cross branches, any misshapen branches, and any branches thinner than the width of a pencil 5. Prune paniculata trees with the same techniques but be mindful to keep the tree ball shape 6. Dwarf varieties do not need a prune, you can simply deadhead. 7. BONUS TIP- if you have new small planting, you don’t need to prune, simply deadhead Check out my hydrangea care highlight for full tutorials! #hydrangeaqueen #paniclehydrangea #hydrangeapaniculata #hydrangeapaniculatalimelight #limelighthydrangea #limelighthydrangeas #gardenreels #flowerreels #pruning #hydrangeatips

Don’t make this mistake with your hydrangeas. Before you prune, make sure you know which type of hydrangea you have growing in your garden. Right now in late winter and early spring many gardeners start pruning hydrangeas, but different types flower on different growth. Some hydrangeas form their flower buds the year before on what’s called old wood. If those stems are cut back now, you may remove the flowers before they ever open. Hydrangeas that usually bloom on old wood include: 🌸 Bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) 🌸 Mountain hydrangea (Hydrangea serrata) 🌸 Oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) Because of that, pruning should be minimal. I usually leave my oakleaf hydrangeas mostly alone unless they need shaping or there is dead growth to remove. For bigleaf hydrangeas, I prefer to wait until the plant fully leafs out before touching it. Once the leaves emerge, it becomes much easier to see which stems are alive and which ones didn’t survive winter. At that point I’ll remove dead stems and clip off old blooms if needed. Reblooming varieties like Endless Summer can bloom on both old and new wood, but the earliest flowers still come from buds that formed the previous season, so I still prune them carefully after the plant fully leafs out. Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be pruned in late winter or early spring. These include: 🌸 Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) 🌸 Smooth hydrangea (Hydrangea arborescens) These are the ones I’m pruning back right now. A helpful rule of thumb when pruning hydrangeas is to avoid removing more than about one-third of the plant at a time. Save this post so you remember before pruning your hydrangeas this spring. 🌿🌸

➡️ If your hydrangeas are giving you the silent treatment (aka no blooms)… it might be something you’re doing wrong. Here are 3 mistakes to quit now: 1. ✂️ Cutting them at the wrong time – For bigleaf (macrophylla) and oakleaf types, don’t prune in spring. They bloom on old wood — so snipping in early spring = no flowers. 2. 🌞 Too much sun – They’re not desert plants. Afternoon shade is their best friend, especially in hotter zones. 3. 💧 Light watering – A little sprinkle won’t cut it. Deep, infrequent watering encourages stronger roots and better blooms. 👆 Hydrangeas can thrive with just a few changes. 💾 Save this for next time you’re tempted to grab the pruners! 🌸 Follow @brendoncarroll for garden tips that actually work. 💬 Did you make any of these mistakes before? Now is the perfect time in North Alabama to prune your panicle hydrangeas before spring growth begins. This specific plant is a limelight hydrangea in “tree form.” Proper pruning now keeps your landscape looking neat and encourages strong, healthy blooms later in the season. When to prune: Late Winter (Jan–Feb)How much to cut: Remove crossing branches and shape as needed. Also remove all small branches that wouldn’t support this season’s growth. Why now: New growth is about to start, and pruning now prevents cutting off fresh buds later. Pro Tip: Always use clean, sharp pruners and step back as you trim to keep a balanced, tree-like shape.
