When to Prune Hydrangeas — And How to Do It Right 🌸 Don’t prune after mid-August — you might cut off next year’s flower buds! 🌿 Know your type: • Old wood bloomers (mophead, lacecap, mountain, oakleaf, climbing): prune by end of July • New wood bloomers (panicle, smooth): prune in early spring after last frost ✂️ How to prune: • Count down 2 pairs of leaves from the top — cut just below • Remove weak or floppy stems from the base • Save cuttings for propagation ⚖️ Nervous? Just prune 1/3 of the stems or skip pruning altogether

Pruning is not random — it’s intentional. And timing makes all the difference. 🌸 Spring bloomers like Azalea, Forsythia, and Lilac -Prune them right after they bloom ☀️ Summer bloomers like Buddleia and Caryopteris bloom on new growth. Prune late winter & early spring. 💙 Hydrangeas? Know your variety. • Hydrangea paniculata & Hydrangea arborescens = prune late winter/early spring. • Hydrangea macrophylla = blooms on old wood — prune carefully after flowering. 🌹 Roses thrive with an early spring cutback before dormancy breaks. Use Sharp, clean shears. Remove crossing or weak branches. And avoid fall pruning — new growth + frost is never a good mix. Healthy pruning means stronger plants, better structure, and more abundant blooms. #SpringGarden #PruningTips #HydrangeaCare #RoseCare FloweringShrubs GardenDesign LandscapeCare GardensOnTheGo SeasonalGardening HomeGarden

One of the most common questions we get asked is “how do I prune my hydrangeas and still ensure they bloom the following year?” The answer: There are two types of hydrangeas that each requires a different pruning method. 1. Panicle Hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata) bloom on new wood, which means you can prune them in late winter or early spring. Don’t be afraid to cut them back hard - this actually encourages stronger stems and bigger blooms. 2. Macrophylla Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) bloom on old wood. If you cut them back too hard in the spring, you’ll likely cut off this year’s flowers. These should only be lightly pruned right after they finish blooming in late summer - removing spent flowers and dead stems only. Same plant family. Very different pruning approach. Equally gorgeous flowers. Not sure which one you have? That’s where we come in. 🌸 #hydrangeacare #landscapetips #gardeningtips #gardeneducation #gardencare

Pruning your hydrangea in spring? Stop ✋ There isn’t one rule. There are two. If you cut the wrong type the wrong way… you could be removing all this year’s flowers. Here’s the simple way to remember it: 🌿 Old wood hydrangeas (like Hydrangea macrophylla and Hydrangea quercifolia) → Light tidy only. Remove old flower heads and a few oldest stems at the base. 🌿 New wood hydrangeas (like Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens) → Cut back hard to around 30cm. They’ll regrow and flower this year. That’s it. No jargon. No guesswork. Just loads of hydrangea flowers 🌸 Save this for pruning day. Panicle hydrangea trees are pruned to be like that but they are naturally shrubs. Either way, unless they are dwarves, which can still get 4-8 feet wide depending on variety, they are going to get huge so be careful where you put them! I planted mine 4 feet from the house and kind of wish I’d given it 6. I have snow on mine now but the best time to prune these is late winter/early spring. For me in New England this is around the first day of spring and believe or not, that is coming soon! Don’t be afraid to be brutal with these, especially if you have one that is overgrown. They bounce back. Note: DO NOT confuse this with a big leaf/Macrophylla hydrangea. Those should not be pruned back until much later in the spring and only if the stems are dead from a cold winter. (You can also prune a little to control for size if you need to.) About me: I’m a professional garden coach and I help people save time and money and find joy in gardening. This is fairly long demo. Consider it a meditation and apply this to any panicle hydrangea variety. I recommend late winter/early spring, which is usually around April Fool’s day where I am. Don’t wait too long or you’ll potentially be cutting off this year’s buds or perhaps just delaying the bloom time. Removing extraneous branches allows the plant to focus its energy on the ones they remain and tidying it up make it look better. Do you need to do this every year? No, but as I said to these clients, I do recommend it at least every other. Lots more hydrangea content in the highlights! Not sure how to prune Hydrangea macrophylla without losing flowers? ✂️🌸 The secret: they flower on old wood, so pruning too hard means no blooms this summer. Here’s the simple rule I follow: 🌿 Remove only dead flower heads — cut back to the first strong pair of buds below.🌿 Take out any dead, damaged, or very weak stems at the base.🌿 Avoid hard pruning in spring — less is more with these hydrangeas. Done right, you’ll get stronger plants and bigger blooms year after year. Save this for pruning season 🌱 #HydrangeaCare #GardenTips #PruningGuide #HydrangeaMacrophylla #GardenAdvice UKGardening GardenDesign

If you’ve ever wondered how much of your hydrangeas to prune, you’re not alone. A recent question from one of our maintenance clients led to a great educational opportunity that we couldn’t keep to ourselves. 👇 Want more gardening tips? Make sure to follow @relish.gardens Before you start pruning, remember that some hydrangeas bloom on old wood while others bloom on new wood. Knowing which type you have is crucial. The hydrangea in this video is a Hydrangea macrophylla, which had been in the ground for years—so it was safe to prune aggressively. When pruning, the goal is to create a vase shape that allows plenty of light and airflow—which not only encourages healthier growth but also reduces the risk of disease and prevents future damage. 5️⃣ Steps for Healthier, Stronger Hydrangeas: ✅ Start by cutting out any branches that are clearly dead. ✅ Keep the strongest upright canes and remove weak, spindly ones that can’t support the weight of blooms. ✅ Remove crossing or rubbing branches which can cause future damage and allow disease to enter. ✅ Space out the remaining canes so that you can see through the plant slightly—this improves airflow, reduces fungal risk, and encourages healthier regrowth. ✅ Avoid shearing off the flowers or shaping your hydrangeas into a ball. This causes weak growth and over time it leads to a dense, chaotic structure with lots of dieback in the center. Hydrangeas are incredibly resilient and will push out plenty of new growth in the spring—as long as they have the proper amount of light and air. So don’t be afraid to start—your plant will thank you! 👇 Want more gardening tips? Make sure to follow @relish.gardens #hydrangeapruning #pruningtips
