Let’s make our writing stronger 📖🕯️📝 This tip is something I think I learned far too late (about my second year of uni). The word “this” can be FAR too vague for an essay or a paper. We need to include a noun afterward so that it is abundantly clear what it is we are referring to. Do not: “this proves that isolation versus independence is a key theme in Villette” Instead: “this example proves that isolation versus independence is a key theme in Villette” This is such a small change but you’d be surprised by how often my students write too vaguely, thinking I can easily follow along and understand what they mean. One of my biggest tips for visualizing this is hitting command F on your keyboard and searching “this”. That way, all of the hanging “this” will be highlighted for you. I hope this is a useful tip!!
