SEThis week I was reminded of my completely fascinating trip to China a year ago with the Lee’s.
I wore my evening PJ set made with the silk I found in an anonymous vast textile building in Guangzhou. .
It’s taken more than a year from buying to creating to wearing. Slow fashion .
I was looking for something special in China and I dragged everyone into my quest. It was clear. My dreams of Chinese embroidered coats .. zero …. The old China no longer existed… and had been destroyed by the Cultural Revolution…nothing from the past had existed … and it was hanging by a thread in the early 80’s when I had bought embroidery on fine muslin .. and stiff brocades in Hong Kong in the Chinese government shop .
But we persevered in my desire to find “ something “ and we eventually struck gold !!
We found a tiny glass case ( locked) housing about 10 rolls of Yun Brocade — “Cloud Silk” made for the Chinese Imperial Court
The name for this silk is perfect. I’ve never ever seen anything like it!!!!
For more than 1,600 years this remarkable textile has been woven in Nanjing, once the great imperial capital. It was the fabric of emperors.
We were told what makes Yun brocade so extraordinary is the complexity of its making. The traditional loom requires two weavers working together , one sitting below controlling the silk threads, while another sits above selecting the pattern threads by hand. It is an astonishing choreography of skill and patience.
Real gold and silver threads are often woven into the silk, omg it’s gorgeous!. Because of the intricacy, some pieces take months, even a year to complete.
At a dinner party this week I met a charming Chinese couturier @budism who was intrigued and asked what the fabric cost , all I said was I couldn’t afford it. It was so expensive. And I needed 10 to 12 metres !! ( this apparently wasn’t a helpful answer !)
So we don’t know. How annoying . I’ve forgotten .
Interestingly I’m also a fan of hand guided machine embroidery… the skill and artistic flair required is astonishing. And takes courage as it’s quite scary to make . Here @bettyleesydney is wearing her jacket found at the same shop with this stunning type embroidery.
