HOYesterday afternoon, March 23, we worked with Kona low storm recovery coordinators to open up temporary dump sites at Patsy T. Mink Central Oʻahu Regional Park (CORP) and Bill & Pegy Patty Kaiaka Bay Beach Park.
Both sites are for official use only, and are not for public debris dumping. Residents in Waialua and Hale‘iwa may continue to place storm-related debris at the curb or roadside for collection, or transport storm debris to City transfer stations & convenience centers, including the Kawailoa Transfer Station in Haleʻiwa.
Specifically today, we want to address concerns about CORP, why this popular park was chosen as a temporary dump site, and what will be done to return this site back to public use once the rubbish is removed.
This portion of CORP, near the corner of Ka Uka Blvd. & Kamehameha Highway, is not regularly permitted for public use. So it normally only gets casual usage. This location is also easy for dump trucks to access, so they can work efficiently, safely, and with minimal impact to the rest of the park (which remains open).
The rubbish being stored there are household items & storm debris, basically what is left of the homes & possessions of those most heavily impacted by the storms on the North Shore. We are committed to helping those impacted neighbors the best we can, and providing this space to help them recover is one of the many ways we can do that.
Another way we take care is by reassuring CORP park users that we are committed to returning this field back to safe, clean, recreational use once the need for a temporary dump is finished. We have a contractor who specializes in storm debris management who will help with this, along with the support and expertise from our other City agencies.
