TAPuppies are hard! And no one is immune to their craziness- not even a dog trainer!
Someone commented on my TikTok today with “Does having the potty option in the play pen train them that it’s ok to go inside?” And my reply is:
They are only 9 weeks old & have only ever been going potty inside, so they actually do think it’s ok to go on the pads. So, yes, I’m totally ok with that. It would be unrealistic to expect a 9 week old puppy to 1. give me the proper signals, then 2. I happen to catch that exact moment and then 3. I’m able to get them alllll the way outside before they go potty… that’s not realistic, you know?? With this play pen set up, I’m able to see for myself what signals they give (via the camera I watch 24/7 lol) and then in 2 ish weeks when their bladder control is a lil bit better, we will all have a better experience going outside! Plus, I’m also potty training on the @freshpatch as well this whole time, to get them used to the grass. That’s important! Use both! Make the potty spot easy for them, and they will go potty outside SO EASILY around 12-14 weeks old. Routine & consistency first, then outdoor potty training second.
These babies are definitely a lot to handle but I really love them and want their space to be clean so I clean it 4x a day lol, let me know if you want a cleaning list because I GOT IT DOWN!! 🥳

LIPotty training, but make it stress-free 🐶
If you know, you know… British weather + 5 week old puppies = muddy chaos
That’s why we’ve been LOVING using the Piddle Patch from @piddlepatch 💚
Potty Training in the early days is VITAL!
But HOW DO WE DO IT???
First off, at 4 weeks we start putting the puppies onto puppy pads and stimulating them to wee. Puppies are predisposed to NOT wee or poo where they sleep, so creating sleeping areas and pee areas is simple.
We quickly add the command “WEEWEE” every time the puppies have a wee. And POOPOO when they poo. This helps us give them a command to use the potty before putting them to bed.
Then at 5 weeks we stated including the piddle patch! Puppies are watched and placed on the grass every time they sniff for a wee. Very quickly, they learnt that GRASS = WEE!
That’s why it’s been a total game-changer for our little ones:
🐾 Consistency is everything – we always take the puppies straight to the Patch after naps, feeds, and playtime. Same spot, every time. They’re already learning “this is where we go”
🌱 Garden prep made easy – the grass texture helps them associate toileting with a natural surface, so when they’re big enough to head outside, the transition to the garden is SO much smoother.
🌧️ Perfect for wet UK weather – let’s be honest, no one wants 5 week old puppies out in pouring rain. They shiver even when we open the back door! So Using the Patch indoors keeps them warm, dry and comfortable while they’re still tiny.
🧼 Cleaner home, happier pups – fewer accidents, clearer routine, and confident babies who are already building great habits.
We’re big believers that early routine builds confident dogs — and having a dedicated indoor grass toilet has made all the difference during these early weeks

Here are my Top 5 Tips for Potty Training Your Puppy Quickly:
1️⃣ Set a Schedule & Stick to It!
Feed at the same times every day, and take your pup out 5–20 minutes after eating — that’s when nature calls! ⏱️
2️⃣ Positive Reinforcement
The moment your puppy goes potty outside or on the pad — praise them like crazy 🎉 and give a treat! Make them feel like they just won an award. 🏆
3️⃣ Supervise Like a Hawk
No free roam until fully trained! 🛑 Use a playpen and watch for signs like sniffing or circling — that means it’s potty time.
4️⃣ Frequent Potty Breaks
Take your puppy outside every 2 hours during the day.
If using a pad, remove poop immediately but keep the same pee pad for the day — the smell helps them remember where to go! 🐶💡
5️⃣ Patience + Consistency
Stay on top of these steps and your pup will get it super fast!

It’s almost always a timing + supervision problem 👀⏰

❌ wait too long to take them out ⏲️

AMPunishing toilet accidents in the house does nothing helpful but teach your puppy to not toilet in front of you.
Teach toileting outside from the start and reward every success with a food treat.
If a puppy has an accident, that’s on you, your lack of supervision, or lack of setup/management– not the puppy.
For longer periods, I’ll use a Potty Plant inside the play pen so they get consistency with the grass.
Train the behaviour you want. Prevent the accidents and you will toilet train your puppy super quickly.
