AFWhen Kuduro/Afrohouse meets tradition…
Vanini’s “Tchianda” is a modern Kuduro/Afrohouse track that shows how traditional culture continues to live on in Angola’s urban sound and style. The video celebrates Tchianda as it’s expressed in Chokwe culture.
The dancers are adorned in traditional Chokwe attire — dressed as Mukixi (masked spirits) and wearing Mwana Pwo masks. They also wear the voluminous raffia backpiece characteristic of Chokwe mukishi costumes — a striking element that enhances movement and presence.
Tchianda has deep roots in Chokwe culture from the provinces of Moxico, Lunda Norte, and Lunda Sul. It’s also performed in neighboring provinces such as Bié, where the cultural dress for the dance differs from that of the Chokwe.
In previous AfroConex posts, we’ve shared Tchianda from the perspective of Ovimbundu culture in Bié — another example of how Angola’s dances cross regions, adapt, and thrive in diverse cultural contexts.

VIToday, I have the joy of singing again for the Faculty of Psychology at the @unigeneve at 18:00.
I’m truly looking forward to this ceremony, because music has always been essential to every ritual, in every culture.
As a singer and performer, I bring a unique voice and presence that can adapt to very different settings: academic ceremonies, festivals, and spiritual or community rituals of all kinds.
