It’s called a spring-loaded planishing hammer (aka a stationary planishing hammer), and I’ll be honest—I’d never used one until @pepetools_usa sent me this one to try.
I’ve been making jewelry since high school and running @metalsmithsociety since February 2018, and somehow this tool never crossed my bench... until now 👀
In this video, I used it to hammer silver into a coin die—so satisfying. I also tried it with 14k gold, but even after annealing, it was a little too hard to get a clean impression. Someone gave a great tip to tape it so I will try that next time. This thing is 🔥 for:
– Flattening and straightening metal
– Work-hardening with control
– Smoothing out hammer marks
– Prepping bezel or ring stock
– Swaging an ingot when you take a freshly poured ingot and you hammer to compress the metal. This compression helps refine the grain structure of the metal, making it more dense and uniform. This reduces internal stress and air pockets from casting, which are often what cause cracks during rolling. By swaging first, you’re basically giving the metal a stronger, more stable foundation before you start rolling it thinner. After swaging you anneal.
You just place your metal on the flat table and press down—no power required, just spring-loaded pressure and those hardened 100mm platens.
