Have you ever had a performance evaluation and it didn’t go as well as you thought? ​ ​Let’s prevent that from happening this year. Have your receipts ready! ​ ​Here’s how👇🏾 ​ ​🟡 Reflect on your wins and success throughout the year. Write down specific examples of how you met or exceeded your goals and the impact your contributions had on the company. ​ ​🟡 Reflect on the skills you gained or further developed. If you’ve worked on any stretch projects, write down the skills you demonstrated. ​ ​🟡 Reflect on the feedback you received throughout the year. Look at old emails where someone congratulated you or shouted you out for your work. Also, make sure you reflect on the constructive feedback and how you’ve developed in that area. ​ ​ ​ ​Doing all of these things will help you be prepared for your performance evaluation to have an impactful conversation with your manager. ​ ​This is your time to shine your light and articulate the value you add to the organization. The Peter Principle is a concept in management theory formulated by Dr. Laurence J. Peter in his 1969 book The Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong. It states that: “In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to their level of incompetence.” Key Ideas: People are often promoted based on their performance in their current role, not their ability to succeed in the new role. Eventually, they reach a position where they lack the skills or competence to perform effectively. Once at this “level of incompetence,” they remain stuck because they are no longer considered for promotion. Example: A great software engineer is promoted to team manager because of their technical skills. But management requires leadership, delegation, and communication skills—which they may lack. As a result, they may underperform as a manager, despite being excellent in their previous role. Consequences: Organizations can become filled with managers who are not effective. Efficiency and morale may decline. Coping with the Peter Principle: Dual career paths (allowing technical experts to advance without moving into management). Better training and mentoring before promotions. Performance evaluation by potential skills, not just past performance.
