One of the small tricks that makes a big difference in our gardens. Instead of relying heavily on mulch, we often plant living mulch systems. Slow crops like sweet potatoes, squash, or beans go in first. Then we broadcast fast-growing crops like mustard and cilantro right over the beds. They germinate quickly, cover the soil, and beat the weeds to the space. We get two or three harvests from the greens, and by the time they’re finishing up the vines and slower crops are already moving in and taking over the bed. So the soil stays covered, the weeds stay suppressed, and we get more food from the same space. Simple systems like this are what allow gardens and farms to become truly productive and resilient. For those who want to go deeper, everyone who shows up to our free two-day live event next week will receive a copy of our full gardening course, plus our plant propagation and composting courses as a thank you for joining us. What is a herb spiral? 🐚 It’s a permaculture-designed raised garden bed in a spiraling, nautilus shape. By varying the height and structure, it creates distinct microclimates—hot and dry at the top, cool and moist at the bottom—allowing different herbs to grow in a small area. My brother flew up before my wedding to help me get the yard ready to receive guests. I could not have done this project without him… there was so much soil and sand to move to the spiral, not to mention sitting through the forgotten pile of bricks on the land. Eternally grateful for this. Because this midwestern soil is so dense, we mixed in a lot of sand to increase drainage especially at the top. I used kelp fertilizer too. At the top I had planted rosemary, thyme and oregano. The middle had sage, chives, cilantro, marjoram and basil. And at the bottom I planted tarragon, parsley and spearmint. In between I had marigold plants (which I probably won’t do this year. They took over 😅) We ate like kings over the summer. I was able to make the most beautiful pestos and tomato sauces with the herbs from the spiral. Not to mention making my own GREEN SEASONING to do my meats propah! This is one garden I recommend to anyone wanting to start growing their own food. Mine is larger than average, but if you have a spare 5 ft of space, you can build one of these! It is the most low maintenance design possible! #permaculture #herbspiral #healthyliving #permacultura #gardening
