Your gym locker is lying to you. It is NOT a "Combination" lock... it is a Permutation lock! 🤯
What is the difference? It all comes down to one question: Does Order Matter?
1️⃣ Permutation (Order Matters): 🏆
Think of a Password or a Race.
Red 🔴 then Blue 🔵 is DIFFERENT from Blue 🔵 then Red 🔴.
1-2-3 is not the same as 3-2-1.
Formula: n(P,r) = {n!}/{(n-r)! (The number of possibilities is HUGE).
2️⃣ Combination (Order
Doesn't Matter): 🥗
Think of a Fruit Salad.
Apple 🍎 + Banana 🍌 is the exact same salad as Banana 🍌 + Apple 🍎.
The order you drop them in creates the same result.
Formula: n(C,r) = {n!}/{r!(n-r)!} (The number of possibilities is smaller).
The Visual Rule:
If you swap the elements and the meaning changes, it’s a Permutation.
If you swap them and nothing changes, it’s a Combination.
