One thing I’ve noticed is so many pages dedicated to chronic illness are meant to make you feel less alone and while I think that is SO important-sometimes it can catch us in perseverating on the difficulties only. I exist to show you that life and HOPE is available to you. I have hEDS/MCAS/POTS and after my life was burned to the ground (more than once I’ll say) I have rebuilt every single piece intentionally. Now, I’m an entrepreneur and business owner, I have an amazing husband and mold free home with 2 doodles, and we are still working towards our dream of becoming parents. If you need hope on your journey and want to see what’s possible, you should join me. I’ll be still sharing the realities as well, but also the workarounds and the way I live my life-it’s a little different but who says different is wrong? “The day I don’t have hope is the day I quit trying.” #mcas #pots #heds #chronicillness #autoimmune

When a student is perseverating on something it can be challenging to teach them something else. But this doesn’t justify taking words away from them. We can’t talk words away from verbal students so we should take them away from device users. Model other language and use something other than the device as a teaching tool so their voice stays THEIR VOICE. #aacgram #autismspeaks #disability #autismawareness #specialedteacher

Am I making the right decision? What if I make the wrong one? Perseverating on this can lead to analysis paralysis. Often, people hesitate to make a choice and default to doing things the way they’ve always done them, even if it causes pain, suffering, discomfort, and prevents growth or progress. I see this frequently when it comes to decisions around food and exercise. There’s a fixation on always “getting it right” when it comes to nutrition, diet, or recovery. This pressure to make every choice perfect can be overwhelming. That’s why I like to review this decision-making framework with clients to help them make thoughtful choices—not just about food and exercise but also about life in general. You’ll find it below. Save it for later, and don’t forget to follow for more insights to deepen your clinical skills in working with disordered eating and body image issues. 1. What decision do you have to make? 2. List the options. What possible actions could you take? Remember, when you brain-storm solutions, write all solutions down, no matter how ridiculous they seem! Try not to judge the options / solutions at this stage. 3. Weigh the consequences. List the pros and cons of each option. 4. Consider your values and priorities. What is most important to you? 5. Decide and act. Describe what you will do. Explain your decision. Do the thing! 6. Most importantly, evaluate your choice. You can evaluate immediately after, the next day, the following week, the next month. Pick a time when you will evaluate your choice. How do you feel about the action you took? Would you take a different action if faced with the same scenario again? What did you learn? Do you need to make a change? . . . \#lcsw #mft #counselor #therapistsofig #counselorsofig #therapistsofinstgram #therapist #psychotherapist #psychologists #therapistlife #therapistsconnect #therapistintraining #newtherapist #futuretherapist #moderntherapist #millennialtherapist #traumatherapist #anxietytherapist #ocdtherapist #emdrtherapist #socialworker #socialworkers #therapistlife

Did you know that depression and anxiety are among the most *common* psychiatric disorders to co-occur? (meaning they happen at the same time!) . The two have a complicated relationship as you can imagine; they often feed into one another and create negative cycles. When someone is anxious and perseverating over a problem/worry, this can lead to depression. On the other hand, depression can often lead to a lot of anxiety and even panic attacks. See the cycle? One can easily trigger the other… . According to #NAMI estimates show 60% of those with anxiety will also have symptoms of depression, and the numbers are similar for those with depression also experiencing anxiety. So bottom line … YES. You *can* have both at the same time … and no it’s not weird. . *Reminder that this is ONLY social media and it is not a replacement for therapy/counseling from a professional. It’s only here for educational purposes! 🫶🏽* . Side note: this song is a FULL BLOWN CAR CONCERT on repeat because @postmalone and @morganwallen absolutely KILLED this track 👏🏽💥🔥 Anyone else? They are perseverating on the device" or "They don't use it functionally." We hear things like this when a student says a word over and over by selecting it on their AAC device.  There are different reasons why that may happen. In every case, the student is communicating something.  But maybe they are trying hard to tell you something!  We can facilitate communication and figure out why they keep saying a particular word by observing, responding, and waiting. Let's assume they have something to say, but we don't know what that is. When we jump to conclusions, we run the very real risk of missing out on important communication exchanges. Let's model communication around that word and incorporate it into the learning space until we figure it out.  Maybe the student finds the sound of that particular word regulating. In that case, the student is still communicating. Pressing that icon tells us that something in the environment is dysregulating. Does the student press that icon less in certain situations and more in others? Collaborating with an occupational therapist may help. We understand that in a busy classroom environment, there are times when the student saying a word repeatedly can start to feel like nails on a chalkboard. Ask yourself this question. "If a student was saying a word over and over again using oral speech, and not an AAC device, what would I do?"  You can't remove a word from a student's brain or force them not to talk, so how would you handle that?  Every student has to learn that there is a time to talk and a time to listen. The strategies you use for speaking students may work with your non-speaking students.  Video description: A photo of a camel is shown and to the side of it there is a video of Becky (a woman with long dark hair) speaking.  Audio transcription: It's Wednesday, so let's talk about another common barrier to AAC implementation, and how we can get over that hump with the solution. I think we've all been in situations where a teacher or staff member has come to us and said the student's not using their device functionally. They just keep pressing the same button over and over again. It can be easy, in those situation

Why do our brains seem so intent on focusing on the negative? Do you notice that when something bad happens we swirl it around and around in our mind, perseverating on it, replaying it, and reliving all the negative emotions? When something good happens, our brains give it about half that energy and effort. In fact, sometimes, our brains straight up discount the positive that just happened or dismiss the positive thing someone said. This is called negativity bias, and it’s a completely natural habit of the human brain. The good news is, we can take control of this. This habit CAN be re-wired. You BECOME what you focus on. So imagine how much better you will feel if your focus is on the good, the positive, the silver linings, and on gratitude all day? Try it out for size this week. Comment on how it makes you feel! #QuoteOfTheWeek #FocusOnTheGood #brainscience #countyourblessings #PositiveMindset

ADHD, sensory processing disorder, ODD, perseverating, anxiety, depression, “ants in your pants”… But let’s go back a few hundred years. These people would thrive! They’d have lots of time in the sun, plenty of sensory input from carrying heavy things, gardening with their hands, doing yard work and playing outdoors in the mud. It wouldn’t be hard to sit still because they wouldn’t have to sit still unless they wanted to. And because humans learn best in a hands-on way when it’s intrinsically motivated and without switching topics or tasks every 20 minutes 🤪, that desire to go all in on doing / learning something can be seen as admirable. Tools can be helpful! I love my red light / infrared light when I can’t get outside for sunrise or sunset. Lifting weights, time outdoors, acupressure mats and blankets / weighted blankets can be helpful for providing the sensory input we innately need. But I think it’s so important to remember these are tools meant to simulate the real, natural world and not replace them AND that some people are more sensitive / perceptive to a changing world that is becoming less natural and less healthy and their body + brain noticing such doesn’t have to be thought of as a disorder. If one has a very normal, natural response to an environment that’s less normal or natural than ever, that’s a HEALTHY response IMO. Less time outdoors, more sitting than ever, children who do not have parents who see them as a cooperative part of the family, too much screen time, no daytime sunlight and no evening time darkness, no exposure to temperatures < 68 degrees or > 70 degrees, no puddles or climbing trees, lots of processed food. That would be how I’d *create* ADHD, sensory issues, ODD, anxiety, depression if someone asked me for my opinion on a recipe. Those who can feel when something is “off” have a superpower. And we get to listen. Then, we get to do what we can, when we can to restore a more natural, normal environment for ourselves and those around us. If you are — or you know — someone who is more sensitive / perceptive, congrats. You can feel what many others have become numb to. Let’s swing the pendulum back a lil more + thrive. 💜☀️

73% of 25- to 35-year-olds chronically overthink, along with 52% of people ages 45 to 55. In many cases, overthinking could show up as rumination, which often involves perseverating on events of the past and even the present with a negative mindset. A little note for dealing with uncertainty 🤍 If you find yourself anxious and dealing with uncertainty, perseverating on the dilemma or polling your friends— this likely won’t help you find the answers/calm your anxiety. By slowing down, acknowledging the uncertainty and focusing on connecting to yourself, you can alleviate some of that pressure of “needing to figure it out”. Sometimes when we do this, the answers will come.
