More mental effort freed up to devote to other areas of your life. It’s a win all around! As an example, those of you striving to consume more protein may find that getting in some protein with your breakfast in the mroning is a huge help. I’ve noticed a lot of people have lower protein breakfasts and lunches and then find themselves way short by the time dinner rolls around. Here is a protein shake I made this morning. It takes me about 2 minutes total to put together and gives me a blast of 30-40g protein, which helps me meet my personal protein targets each day. Here’s the way I like to make it: 1 cup any milk 1 heaping scoop @pescience protein powder, any flavor (I used chocolate truffle) - “soheefit” saves you 15% 1tbsp or more peanut butter 1 frozen banana (not frozen is also fine, but you may want to add ice) 2 dates (try it 😋) splash of creamer (this was a new addition 👍) handful spinach Get in the habit of consuming a high protein breakfast. It doesn’t have to be this one! BTW, you can use any other protein powder you prefer (I recommend making sure it’s third party tested). And also, you don’t have to consume protein powder at all if’s not your thing! I’ll be sharing more high protein breakfast options in the future, so stay tuned. A high protein diet - and consuming protein shakes - is not bad for the kidneys or liver in healthy individuals. Many individuals think that a high protein diet is harmful for the kidneys and liver and has adverse impacts on bone health. However, these beliefs have no evidence-based support. The current Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8g/kg bodyweight per day. But as Stu Phillips and colleagues write in their 2016 article, "Protein 'requirements' beyond the RDA: implications for optimizing health," there are health benefits to consuming protein in higher amounts than the RDA. Specifically, a higher protein diet may help with healthy aging, appetite regulation, and athletic performance, as well as preventing “age-related sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass, and strength that predisposes older adults to frailty, disability, and loss of autonomy”. For optimal health, Stu Phillips and colleagues recommend that people consume 1.2-1.6g/kg bodyweight per day. In strength and conditioning, 2.3-3.1g/kg lean body mass per day is typically recommended as the minimum for optimal body composition. From a practicality standpoint, I recommend a range of approximately 0.73-1.0g/1lb current bodyweight per day for positive impacts on body composition unless an individual is highly active and/or genuinely prefers a higher protein diet. The point is that your protein needs will vary based on your goal. While you don't have to eat a ton of protein to live a long and happy life, a high protein diet is NOT dangerous for your health. In a large mixing bowl, combine all ingredients and mix until no dry bits remain. Do not overmix. Divide batter evenly into a 12-cup muffin pan. Bake for 15 minutes.
