—out of instinct. In nature, a visibly weak animal becomes a target. Thousands of years of domestication haven't erased that programming. Your dog can be in significant pain and behave almost normally
—until the discomfort becomes impossible to conceal. At that point, the problem has already progressed. 🐕
Eight signs your dog needs attention:
— Hesitates before going up stairs: it's not laziness or old age. Joint pain first manifests in movements that require asymmetrical weight-bearing. If a dog that used to run up stairs now pauses before the first step, the joints are trying to tell you something.
— Can't find a comfortable sleeping position: gets up, moves around, lies down again, doesn't rest. Chronic pain worsens at rest because there's no longer the distraction of movement.
— Eats more slowly or leaves food in the bowl: a dog that always finished in thirty seconds and now chews carefully may have dental, gum, or jaw pain. Oral pain is the most underestimated.
— Panting at night while resting: He's not hot, he hasn't exercised, he's lying in the dark, and he's panting. Nighttime panting while resting is one of the most reliable signs of chronic pain or internal discomfort.
— Sitting awkwardly: with a hind leg extended sideways instead of tucked under his body. Sideways leg movement is often the first visible sign of hip or knee pain.
— Falling behind on walks: He's not sniffing or getting distracted anymore. He's walking slower than he did a month ago. The change is gradual
—compare today's walk to one from three months ago.
— Arched back: Compensatory muscle tension due to abdominal, lower back, or hip pain.
— A dull gaze for no apparent reason: Chronic pain takes an emotional toll. A dog that has lost its sparkle in its eyes for no obvious reason deserves a checkup. Whining is the final stage, not the first. Your dog is communicating with you long before that
—with gestures that seem normal until you know what to look for.
