Macrophages perform phagocytosis by recognizing and engulfing pathogens, dead cells, or debris through specific receptors on their surface. The process begins when pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), such as Toll-like receptors (TLRs), recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) or damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) on the target. This triggers the macrophage to extend its plasma membrane around the pathogen, forming a vesicle called a phagosome. The phagosome then fuses with lysosomes, forming a phagolysosome, where the pathogen is broken down by hydrolytic enzymes and acidic conditions. The resulting degraded components are either expelled from the cell or processed for antigen presentation, which plays a role in activating the adaptive immune response. ❤️ Follow for more biology memes! 👀 Check out our main page @nucleicnoodles 🎁 Visit our gift shop for more cool stuff! 👉 Link in bio! #biology #biologymemes #science #sciencememes #sciencefacts

💥Sekorsky. A macrophage, a key player in the immune system, is a large white blood cell specialized in detecting, engulfing, and destroying harmful invaders like E. coli bacteria. When E. coli enters the body, macrophages recognize it as a threat using pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) and initiate phagocytosis—surrounding and engulfing the bacterium into a vesicle called a phagosome. This vesicle then fuses with a lysosome, where digestive enzymes and toxic molecules break down E. coli, neutralizing the infection. Additionally, macrophages release cytokines, signaling other immune cells to mount a stronger defense. While most strains of E. coli are harmless and live in the gut, pathogenic strains can cause infections, making macrophages essential for preventing disease. Pinocytosis is a cellular process where the cell engulfs small molecules and extracellular fluids, bringing them into the cytoplasm. In this animation, these solutes are represented as small spheres. The term “pinocytosis” comes from “pino,” meaning “drinking,” and it's often referred to as the cell’s way of “drinking” its environment. It’s one of the three main types of endocytosis. The internalized fluid is enclosed in tiny vesicles formed from the cell membrane. Phagocytosis, on the other hand, involves specialized cells called phagocytes actively engulfing larger particles such as bacteria, foreign substances, or dead cells. These cells extend their plasma membrane to surround the target—shown here as a bacterium—and internalize it into a structure called a phagosome. Source vid from Chris Ferriola on yt, source audio from Rainbow Six Siege, review by Uribe-Querol & Rosales in Frontiers in Immunology, 2020, "Phagocytosis: Our Current Understanding of a Universal Biological Process" "Phagocytosis is a basic process for nutrition in unicellular organisms, and it is also found in almost all cell types of multicellular organisms. However, only a specialized group of cells called professional phagocytes (1) accomplish phagocytosis with high efficiency. Macrophages, neutrophils, monocytes, dendritic cells, and osteoclasts are among these dedicated cells. Professional phagocytes are responsible of removing microorganisms and of presenting antigens to lymphocytes in order to activate an adaptive immune response. Fibroblasts, epithelial cells, and endothelial cells can also accomplish phagocytosis with low-efficiency and are thus described as non-professional phagocytes...Phagocytosis is the process of sensing and taking in particles larger than 0.5 μm. The particle is internalized into a distinctive organelle, the phagosome. This phagosome subsequently changes the structure of its membrane and the composition of its contents in a process known as phagosome maturation (3). The phagosome next fuses with lysosomes to become a phagolysosome. This new organelle contains enzymes that can degrade the ingested particle (4). ...Non-opsonic receptors directly identify distinct molecular patterns on the particle to be ingested. These receptors include C-type lectins, such as Dectin-1 (5), Dectin-2, Mincle, or DC-SIGN (6); lectin-like recognition molecules, such as CD33; and scavenger receptors (7). Although, the toll-like receptors (TLRs) (8) can also detect molecular patterns on pathogens, they are not phagocytic receptors. Nevertheless, TLRs can cooperate with phagocytic receptors to make phagocytosis more efficient (9)." #immunology #cellbiology

"Phagocytosis in action! 🩸🔬 In our immune system, white blood cells (especially macrophages) act as vigilant defenders, identifying and engulfing damaged or diseased red blood cells. This process, known as erythrophagocytosis, helps maintain healthy blood composition and prevents circulation of dysfunctional cells. Macrophages recognize abnormal RBCs via changes in their membrane proteins, then enclose them in a phagosome, where enzymes and reactive oxygen species break them down. The useful components, like iron, are recycled for new RBC formation. A perfect example of how our innate immunity works tirelessly to protect us—even at the microscopic level."
