Before starting my PhD in the US, I had a LOT of myths in my head. Most of them came from fear, hearsay, and internet horror stories. Here’s what I believed, and what I actually experienced 👇 1. “All PIs are monsters.” Not true. My PIs are understanding, reasonable, and human. They have bad days, because they’re answerable to people too, but they’re not villains. 2. “PhD students work day and night.” You work hard when the situation demands it. No one is forcing you every day. Most of the time, people work a lot because they care about their research, not because someone is watching them. 3. “You lose your life outside research.” Completely false. I’ve been involved in multiple leadership roles alongside my PhD, and those experiences are shaping my future just as much as my research. 4. “You don’t get to travel or attend conferences.” Depends on funding, but if you apply to the right resources, you can attend conferences almost every year, including international ones. 5. “Asking for help is bothering people.” Honestly? If you don’t ask, that’s considered strange here. Reaching out is encouraged. People actually want to help you succeed. 6. “PhD culture is toxic and competitive.” My experience has been the opposite. People are supportive, collaborative, and genuinely root for each other. 7. “You can’t be friends with your PI.” You can absolutely have a friendly, respectful relationship. That’s why researching your PI and lab culture before joining matters so much. 8. “PhD means only becoming a professor.” Not even close. Industry, scientific writing, consulting, finance, startups - a PhD opens far more doors than I ever imagined. I’m not saying a PhD is easy. I’m saying it’s not the nightmare I was told it would be, at least not in the US. If you’re thinking about a PhD and feeling scared or confused, you’re not alone. Save this. Share it. And ask questions.
