Lots of questions yesterday Do I need LiDAR on my iPhone? 👉 If you have iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, or iPad Pro, then you can use the LiDAR mode, which is the fastest (uses light detection sensors in your phone to detect depth) 👉 If you have an earlier iPhone or iPad, then you can use the Photo mode (take lots of photos of your environment) - it’s slower but seems to generate even cleaner results What about Android users? 👉 Go to poly.cam (their website) where you can use Photo Mode to upload images - take lots of images from different angles 👉 I asked the @polycam3d team and they said they’re working on a native Android app as we speak, but for now you can use the website and it still works! 👉 Check out the latest video on @rimshanazir_rn for an example - She messaged me saying that she did hers on Android through the website What if my scan looks distorted? 👉 I struggled with this too, main distortions come when scanning a person (because it’s hard for people to stay perfectly still). The face / hands tend to get distorted, especially using LiDAR mode. To get around this, I zoomed out really fast from myself, so you can only see me up close for a split second, that way the viewer doesn’t notice the distortion on my face 👉 If you want to get a cleaner scan, you can use Photo Mode instead of LiDAR mode (it’s slower, but it can get cleaner results). Make sure to take LOTS of up close photos from every angle on the face, and keep the face very still while you do it Do I have to use a phone? 👉 I haven’t tried this yet, but I read that it also works with DSLR and drone footage (upload to their website poly.cam ). Another Gaussian Splatting scan! For this one, I scanned my parents’ garden (back in September last year). I captured around 800 images with a Sony A7S + 24mm lens. What you see here is the Gaussian Splat scene rendered in Octane Render (Cinema 4D plugin). Rendering is super fast, so this is just a screen capture of the Octane Live Viewer while I’m flying through the scene. What really makes it look so photorealistic is Octane’s physical lens simulation. giving it a very photographic feel with real lens effects like depth of field, chromatic aberration, bloom/glow, and optical vignetting. You can also add virtual objects to the scene (like the motorcycle), and they get lit correctly, reflect the environment, and cast shadows. At that point, it really starts to feel like virtual photography. Photogrammetry Process 1: Capture Object - I used my #canon1dxmarkii with a 24-70mm lens with a crossed polarized ring flash. I used the #syrpgeniemini to rotate the apple remotely. I shot 4 loop passes that each contained 25 photos, each loop I would rotate the apple in a new position to for maximum coverage. 2: Reality Capture - Import all your images into RC and let it create your high poly scanned mesh. RC produces a triangular mesh so we then need to export the OBJ into Zbrush 3: Zbrush - The original model has roughly 11Mil vertexs so we Zremesher the object so we have a lower vertex count and nice quad typography. I also projected the high rez model detail onto the low rez producing nice detail onto a low poly count model with clean typography. 4: 3Ds Max - Import updated model and apply the texture maps onto the model. I use #vray from @chaosgroup for my render engine. I'm still learning how to improve my photogrammetry work flow but to be able to take an object and bring it into your 3D software is pretty amazing. #zbrush #3dsmax #animation #productdesign #foodphotography #foodie #render #epicgames #scan #photogrammetry #apple

For this project, a commission from @neoshibuyatv, Jack’s process involved roaming around Bangkok and capturing intriguing visuals on his phone. The end result – a video collage of real world objects, 2D and 3D animation displayed on large outdoor screens – feels like a digital scrapbook. Jack, who’s originally from London, got into computer graphics in college, when a hand injury temporarily derailed his ability to draw. After watching tutorials and trying out 3D software while his hand healed, he was hooked. With animation, Jack says, “There are constantly new avenues, softwares, processes, challenges and ideas to explore.
