Her “formative years consisted of doing everything I could to keep anyone from looking too closely or from asking too many questions” — including doctors. #Dermatillomania sufferers often don’t discuss their Skin Picking with their doctors out of shame, misinformation, and/or fear. Having the compulsive need to pick your skin is hard enough, and it is helpful when doctors are armed with the knowledge, understanding, and resources it takes to recognize, treat, and manage this controlling #BFRB. We’d like to thank the supportive doctors out there for taking time to learn about the disorder, for responding with compassion instead of judgement, and for working with patients to address Dermatillomania symptoms instead of simply telling them to stop picking. However, if you want to help someone during an episode.. saying “stop picking” won’t do anything. Instead, try giving them a distraction! Particularly with their hands (like fidget toys), but a verbal distraction of conversations about anything can also be beneficial. This was a hard one to finish but here we are. I’ve shared previously that I’m struggling with compulsive, obsessive skin picking and it’s been super bad the last year or maybe just forever. I honestly can’t track what makes me do it, but a year ago I was in the same predicament as now. I’m starting to realize it may be related to an undiagnosed case of ADHD. So I’m planning on finding a primary care doctor (after 2 years almost of not having one) and sharing my concerns. I am also not Jesus or the Holy Spirit, I can’t change anyone and sooner I accept that the more grace I can give to others, even if that’s from afar. Bob the builder has given up her hat and no more fixing people who are every happy with how they are 😌 Definition: a “pick me” is where someone lets their boundaries or expectations be eroded on the basis of having others accept them.
