AVWorking with the Pieps iprobe today. It's an interesting device that's been on the market for a while now but hasn't attracted that much attention. Pieps claim in trails it can save 60% of probing time - they've also developed a search strategy with it that short cuts the final bracketing phase with your transceiver. Both of these elements of an avalanche search burn time - especially with deeper burials. Pro's manage bracketing & probing for deep burials pretty well, but they can be a real issue for recreationalists. Like all equipment it needs familiarisation; but should there be a place for an iprobe in a guides group kit? After all it's likely going to the client searching for the guide should the worst happen...thoughts and opinions welcome.
Worth noting the manual for the iProbe encourages users NOT to bracket as is demonstrated in this video. They advocate bringing your beacon to the lowest number on the X axis and then using the iProbe to guide you in using its audio on the Y axis at its junction with the X. Fine searching & probing is different with the iProbe.
