If you’re curious how long it took to do my PPL training, here’s my timeline! I’m enrolled in a Part 141 course (which is part of my visa requirements). November 21st, 2023: First flight. February 22nd: Phase Check 1, ground April 17th: Phase Check 1, flight April 30th: Phase Check 2, ground and flight May 7th: First solo flight. July 1st: Phase Check 3, ground July 11th: Phase Check 3, flight August 12th: Final Phase Check, ground August 30th: Final Phase Check, flight September 19th: Checkride passed! 🎉 Transparency is important and I hope this has helped anyone that’s curious! Every journey is different and everyone will face challenges. Don’t lose sight of your goals🩷 There were some factors that ultimately ended up extending my timeline more than I anticipated. The main reasons for the delays: ⮕FAA audit of the 141 program, which grounded me while issues were fixed. ⮕Grounding due to discourse on paying installments caused by delays in my training as mentioned above ⮕Changing instructors. ⮕Long wait times for phase checks to be scheduled #aviation #flighttraining #studentpilot #femalepilot

“Thinking about getting into aviation? Here are a few things to know: It’s not just about flying—it’s about discipline, constant learning, and staying sharp. Training takes time, money, and commitment, but the rewards? Freedom, adventure, and a whole new way to see the world. 1. Commitment is Everything •Flight training takes time, consistency, and mental focus. •You’ll face early mornings, tough lessons, and repeat practice. •If you’re not 100% in, progress will be slow—and costly. 2. Medical Fitness is Non-Negotiable •Before anything, make sure you’re medically fit to fly. •Basic issues like poor vision, certain medications, or heart conditions can affect eligibility. •Start with a basic aviation medical exam so you don’t waste time or money. 3. It’s a Financial Investment •Flight training isn’t cheap—expect to invest a lot for private pilot training alone. •Budget for extras like books, tests, headsets, and possible retakes. •Plan ahead so you don’t run out of funds mid-training. 4. Choose Your Flying School Wisely •Not all schools are equal. Some offer fast-track training, others are more flexible. •Look for qualified instructors, good aircraft maintenance, and transparent pricing. •Visit the school, ask questions, and even try a demo flight before committing. If you don't know what these are, I'll explain. With almost every pilot certificate or rating you earn, you will need to pass a "written" test. These tests are multiple choice tests that you can take anytime in the 24 months preceding the date of your actual Checkride with an examiner. I started flight school in March but started studying for my written tests 4 months before that. Here's a list of ones you might want to do, PAR - Private Pilot Certificate IRA - Instrument Rating CAX - Commercial Certificate FIA & FOI - Flight Instructor Certificate I recommend using Sportys study buddy for the PAR and using Sheppard Air for all of the other ones. Don't worry about truly understanding everything before taking the test. These tests are more of a formality and the goal is memorize the test bank and pass the test. Usually you'd want to learn the material but not for these. Just get them done and you will have so much more time to study and actually learn when you're in flight school. Hope this helps! . . #pilot #flightschool #aviation

- ✅Start early and actually commit. I started flying around 16–17 and treated it seriously from day one. Showing up consistently matters more than being “naturally good.” - ✅Apply for scholarships like crazy. I applied to everything I could find, even ones I thought I wouldn’t get. I ended up winning the AOPA Flight Training Scholarship, which paid for my training. - ✅Be around the airport as much as possible. I hung out at the airport, talked to people, and made connections. That’s how I ended up washing planes and volunteering in maintenance hangars. - ✅Network without forcing it. I didn’t ask people for favors. I just talked, listened, and helped out. Aviation is a small world, and being genuine goes a long way. - ✅Be real in your essays and interviews. I told my actual story instead of trying to sound impressive. Passion shows way more than perfect wording. - ✅Don’t waste flight lessons. I studied nonstop and showed up prepared every time. Treat every flight like you’re paying for it yourself, and it adds up fast. #flying #pilot #pilotlife #aviation #planes

Answering some of my most asked questions as an airline pilot ✈️ Q: Where did you go to flight school? A: I went to SIU Carbondale. Q: Did you go to college or just flight school? A: Both! SIU is a Part 141 aviation program, so I got two degrees: a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management and an Associate of Applied Science in Aviation Flight. Q: How long did it take you to become a pilot? A: My first flight was April 11, 2018 and I passed my ATP checkride on April 26, 2025, so just over 7 years. Q: How many flight hours did you need? A: I only needed 1000 hours because I have a restricted ATP from going to an accredited Part 141 university. Q: How much did it cost? A: Honestly… I have no idea. Between loans, tuition, fun rental flights, ground schools, Sheppard Air, all the written exams… it’s impossible to add up. Q: Did you take out loans? A: Yes, I used student loans through my college. Anything the loans didn’t cover came from savings, and I worked through college as well. Q: How did you build flight time? A: I instructed at SIU and UND Aerospace Foundation in Phoenix, Arizona. Q: What aircraft do you fly? A: CRJ550 (CL-65 type rating) Q: Do you fly domestic or international? A: Both, but international is just Ottawa, Canada lol Q: What’s your schedule like? A: It changes every month, but I’m pretty senior so I usually get what I bid for. We find out our schedule 2 weeks prior to that month starting. Q: How many days do you work per month? A: Usually around 12–14 days. Q: What’s the hardest part of the job? A: The sleep schedule. I track it with my @whoop which gives me a lot of insight on how I can try to improve my sleep quality. Q: What’s your favorite part? A: The sense of purpose. Nothing has ever felt as right for me as this career. Q: What’s something people don’t know about being a pilot? A: We don’t just do one flight a day usually, especially at regionals. We can be scheduled to fly up to 5 flights in a single day. #airlinepilot #femalepilot #womeninaviation #pilotlife #flighttraining

How long does it take to get your Private Pilot License? It depends on how often you fly—not just how many hours. ⏱️ The FAA minimum is 40 hours, but most people finish between 60–80. 🗓️ Flying 2–3 times a week? You could be done in 3–6 months. 🛑 Flying once every couple weeks? It could stretch to a year or more. !!! Consistency is key !!! The more often you fly, the less you forget—and the faster you progress #generalaviation #girlpilot #gapilot #privatepilot #studentpilo
