A pioneering conservation project has brought back pine martens to Dartmoor for the first time in more than a century. 🎉 The return of pine martens is the work of The Two Moors Pine Marten Project and comes after years of planning and consultation with local communities. 💚 Pine martens went extinct in the South West of England more than 100 years ago after centuries of deforestation, hunting and trapping. 🌳 Few people are likely to encounter the animals due to their shy nature and nocturnal lifestyles. The Two Moors Pine Marten Project will engage hundreds of people from a wide range of communities across the South West over the next three years. 👥 Head to the link in our bio to learn more about this incredible project. 🔗 @devonwildlifetrust @lovedartmoor @exmoornp @forestryengland @nationaltrust @somersetwt @heritagefunduk #WoodlandTrust #Wildlife #UKWildlife #BritishWildlife #NativeWildlife #WildlifeConservation #PineMartens #Dartmoor #Conservation #Biodiversity

Scots Pine are one of the most ancient trees on our Isles they are truly magnificent. We decided to do a trial to see how a Scot’s Pine would germinate in a cosy compost (man made bed) compared to being gently encouraged in a gritty, rocky, soil lacking embankment - which is 450 meters above sea level and gets completely battered by the elements - nature is truly amazing and knows best. #nature #scotspine #woodland #forrest #habitat #motherearth #callofthewildscotland #caledonian

Throwback to a couple of years ago, almost to the day. What a thinned forest looks like 🌲 As we all know, this is a very nuanced topic and certainly not black and white! Although many people try to make it so. This job was a selective forest thinning of second growth (not old growth) trees, the kind of management you’ll typically see in redwood country. After many decades of growth, foresters plan and carefully select certain trees to be harvested, giving the remaining ones, especially the younger and healthier redwoods, more light, space, and resources to grow. There are limits to the amount of canopy that can be removed to preserve critical microclimates, minimize the impact of aquatic species, and control erosion. The trees selected for are second or third growth, as cutting old growth is prohibited. There are about 1.5 million acres of coast redwood forest in existence today and more trees per acre than historically due to clear cut logging. It is possible for multiple things to exist at once, such as managing certain areas as a renewable crop, continuing to protect the old-growth groves, and promoting the proliferation of future old growth forests in other areas. We can do multiple things at once, conservation and responsible utilization. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. Redwood is an incredible species for sustainable harvest. In good conditions, young trees can grow 2–6 feet in height each year and add over an inch of trunk diameter annually, making it one of the fastest growing in North America and therefore a better option than slower growing tree species of similar age. There are benefits to the responsible utilization, to the best of our ability, of wood vs reliance and creation of plastics and forever chemicals pumped into our environment. I included aerial views of the stand after thinning and from the landing when the logs were being removed via helicopter. To me these vantage points put the operation and goal into perspective. A properly thinned forest still looks like a forest and will remain for generations to come. #timberfaller #treefalling #redwoods #forestmanagement #forestry #treework #timberharvesting #forestthinning

Checking out the cones of the world’s largest species of pine, the sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana)! This species hold the records for being the tallest and most massive of all pines, up to 273 feet tall and growing to a diameter of 11.5 feet. It also has the longest cones of any conifer, growing to 2 feet long, though the coulter pine (Pinus coulteri) of Southern California has more massive cones. This species has its huge pine cones characteristically dangling from the very ends of its upper branches, making it utterly distinctive and identifiable from a long way away, so I thought I’d fly up and get a good look at them! You can see the previous year’s cones open and dry, their seeds all released last fall. You can also see the closed, shiny reddish cones that are still developing! Sugar pines, like many conifers, have winged seeds that helicopter down like maple seeds in the fall, being wind dispersed, but the big tasty seeds are so sought after by birds, bears and squirrels, that many are collected and eaten or stashed away before even taking flight! In this frenzied collection though, seeds are spread far and wide by wing or foot, then buried in the soil to be eaten later. But if the critter that stashed them dies or forgets where they are, then the seeds will sprout from the soil in spring! It is such a treat to get to hike around these remote and rugged Southern Cascade forests with these trees scattered in it. This plant is just so awe-inspiring! #pinuslambertiana #pinus #sugarpine #pine #pinecone #conifers #conifer #pinetree #pinecones #largestpinecone #botany #botanizing #floraofcalifornia #californianativeplants #calflora #bigtrees #treesofinstagram #treestagram #tree

How & Why for our recent habitat restoration work. A massive Thank You to OSU faculty and friends, the forestry climbers @carbon.climber, @sprucecampbell @jknightime1 @nickleboe for the forestry climbing perspectives, and all the other folks I coordinated with on this. @peltsmelt & I were involved in the initial handcutting of the ground based logging ops and that was a great experience- thank you Mr. Bokish. This is interesting and meaningful work and I’m grateful for @camera.kit coming out and documenting the process. Logging in the Northwest gets a bad rep, mostly because folks don’t see the detailed planning and execution of the many contractors to meet and often exceed environmental requirements set forth by State and Federal agencies. This clip details just a small part of how logging contractors sustainably operate in and reinvest in the working forest. . . . #axecontracting #oregon #oregonexplored #oregonforest #forestry #logging #osu #osuforestry #timber #timberfalling #silviculture #forestmanagement #habitatcreation #habitatrestoration #explore #pnw

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is home to the oldest trees in the world, bristlecone pines. Some of these living trees exceed 4000 and even 5000 years of age. You can find it in Inyo National Forest in California, 1h drive from Bishop. I believe that this is a famous Methuselah tree on the video, a 4,854-year-old Great Basin bristlecone pine with a very unique shape. To see it, take the 1-mile loop Discovery Trail. Some articles say that its exact location is hidden though so it might be a different tree 😉 Please leave no trace and help protecting the sensitive nature. https://lnt.org/why/7-principles/ Thanks to @californian.views for suggesting us to go here! 🎥 @amy.traveling (clips 1 and 2) What’s the oldest tree you have seen? . . . . . #californiatravel #unlimitedcalifornia #californiablogger #hiddencalifornia #californiaadventure #californiaholics #InyoNationalForest #uniqueplaces #wandertheworld #keepexploring #wanderlust #visittheusa #theadventurenetwork #travelanddestinations #stayandwonder #starttheadventure #wowplacestogo #outdoortones #adventureenthusiasts

Meet the introduced pine that’s changed our landscape. Pinus radiata, the Monterey pine, came here for timber and found a permanent place in our scenery. Its resin-rich wood burns hot and fast for fire-lighting, its needles create a soft forest floor, and its cones lock away seeds until fire opens them. Not native, but woven into the modern story of the Australian bush🌲 #Bushcraft #PlantKnowledge #PinusRadiata #BushSkills #AustralianBushcraft #WildKnowledge

We have 5 days to save this forest - in both the US & Canada, road paths on public land get aimed through big trees as part of logging projects for different reasons. In the U.S., it’s because the trees are subject to weaker protections as part of a “road building” project than they are as part of a logging project. In Canada, it’s because trees cut down as part of “road building” don’t have to be paid for. Slightly different reasons with the same result. The forest in this video is in the traditional homelands of the Pacheedaht First Nation, unceded to the Canadian province of British Columbia, where 57% of the softwood lumber is exported here to the United States. Both our countries play a role in the fate of this forest, and BC just opened a comment period open to international participation until February 22, 2026. That means all of us can write in, and the more who write in, the better. Find instructions on how to send your letter at the link in my bio! #oldgrowth #forests #outdoors
