CHIf something doesn’t feel right to you there’s a reason for it.
I had received a call from Gooses neurologist saying his MRI and spinal tap showed inflammation of the brain of unknown etiology. “Probably brain cancer but we can’t know for sure unless we biopsy his brain”. She went on to say she never recommends brain biopsy’s. It’s better to just treat it as brain cancer because all signs point to that.
What were the signs besides the MRI results? Goose had started to circle and tilt his head. He would also lean when he walked and he could not walk in a straight line. His balance was terrible. He was only 5 years old and had been in great health up to this point.
I remember thinking that he was one of the “unlucky ones”.
After a few weeks of research I decided I needed to switch his food to raw in order to give him the best nutrition possible. Kibble causes inflammation and that was the last thing he needed. When I told the oncologist what I was doing she immediately told me that I should not do that and it would cause more harm to him. But I had done enough research to KNOW this was EXACTLY what he needed. This was the first red flag.
The second red flag was when it was time for his Nexgard pill. I wanted to be sure it wouldn’t affect the chemo or prednisone that he was taking so I called and asked about it. She was adamant that I NOT give the Nexgard. But why? I thought it was safe?
After more research I learned that most flea and tick chewables are neurotoxins. A poison that attacks the nervous system causing paralysis, seizures and death. The problem is this neurotoxin is supposed to affect the parasite or insect only, not the host. But after much research it is clear that many dogs are experiencing seizures and neurological issues from these chewables.
Goose didn’t have brain cancer. He was experiencing neurological issues from the Nexgard.
It’s been 6 years since I put 2 and 2 together. Not because my vet helped me figure it out. Not because I listened to my vet. But because I listened to ME. I trusted my gut. If something doesn’t feel right, stop. Get a second opinion. Do research. It’s your dog. It’s your choice.
