1TThe Kalash are a Dardic-speaking ethnic group of approximately 4,000 people inhabiting the Bumburet, Rumbur, and Birir valleys of Chitral District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, bordering the Hindu Kush mountain range of northeastern Afghanistan. Neighboring populations including Pashtun, Nuristani, Kashmiri, and Sindhi communities across the Indian subcontinent and Central Asia display similarly pronounced craniofacial variation and phenotypic diversity including light eye pigmentation ranging from blue to green to amber. Traditional pastoral diets across these regions historically centered on raw goat and sheep dairy, clarified butter, organ meats, and animal fat, with minimal exposure to industrially refined foods prior to 20th century urbanization.
