I'm an incomplete quadriplegic and I can move my hands! This question gets asked so much "how can you be a quad and move your hands?" Here's why: 1. Cervical Spine Involvement (C8/T1 Nerves)The C8 and T1 nerve roots exit the spinal cord at the lower part of the cervical spine. These nerves contribute to the brachial plexus, which controls hand and forearm function. Damage to these nerves impairs the muscles that allow for fine motor control and strength in the ring and pinky fingers. (While I broke my neck at c2, I also crushed my spine at T1, among many other places) 2. Ulnar Nerve Distribution: The ulnar nerve, which is derived from the C8 and T1 nerve roots, controls sensation and motor function to the ring and pinky fingers. An incomplete spinal cord injury that affects these nerve roots can lead to weakness, loss of coordination, or numbness in these fingers. 3. Injury to the Lower Cervical Cord: Incomplete injuries to the spinal cord at C8/T1 often spare some function but can still lead to specific deficits in the hands, such as difficulty gripping or flexing the ring and pinky fingers. Since these fingers are typically controlled by the ulnar side of the hand, they are more vulnerable when this part of the spinal cord is compromised. Deficits can range from minimally noticeable, to total paralysis of those fingers.
