Inconsistent Character Behavior: * Example: If a character is established as afraid of heights, don’t have them casually climb a mountain without explanation or development. * Tip: Keep a character bible with notes on each character’s traits and motivations to maintain consistency. Ignoring Established Rules: * Example: If your story’s magic system requires a spell to be cast using certain ingredients, don’t let a character cast the same spell without those ingredients later on. * Tip: Write down the rules of your world and refer to them often to ensure consistency. Convenient Resolutions: * Example: Avoid having a character find a hidden map that leads directly to the treasure right when they need it most, without prior hints. * Tip: Foreshadow important resolutions early in the story, so they feel earned rather than convenient. Timeline Discrepancies: * Example: If a journey is said to take three days, ensure that the characters do not arrive in one day without a clear and logical reason. * Tip: Use a timeline or calendar to map out events and their durations to maintain a consistent chronology. Oh, you’re plotting? Let me help with that! ✨ Below I’ve spilled the beans on my entire plotting process to help you keep YOUR plot tight and invigorating. 🔥 1. Timeline 🕰️ Start with a long line on a piece of paper. Write “beginning”, “middle”, and “end” in their respective places along the line. 2. Scenes 🏞️ Add in the scenes you already have in mind for the story, at their approximate times throughout the story. For example, a climactic scene where the reader receives closure belongs at the end. Everything in plotting is subject to change, so don’t get hung up on perfection here! 3. Connect 🪢 Bridge together your known scenes by brainstorming plausible events. Compare the most likely scenario to the most unlikely, as well as the exciting to the bland. Then take what fits and throw it in. 4. Theme 🪝 Focus on the big picture. What is the theme that you want to explore throughout this story? 5. Synopsies 🥨 Once your timeline is established, you can form chapter by chapter synopsies to guide you on your path as you write. TIPS 👇 • Use the three-act structure not only in your overarching storyline but also in your chapter synopsies. There should be at least three sentences in each one- the first is the inciting event, the second is the middle, and third is the climax. • Use character arcs to help with character development in a way that moves the plot forward. Figuring out what arc each of your characters lives under is essential to plotting out solid personalities. • Now that you have a complete timeline, you can write in some k!ller foreshadowing! 🔥 Are you writing all of this down? Because you’re going to need it! 🤩 My outline style will help you keep track of your story and characters, while still allowing you to change and re-plot as you need. 🙋‍♀️I am a Pantser. There is absolutely NO right or wrong approach to writing🙅‍♀️ ☝️Outline can be great for writers who like to have a plan before they start writing as that gives an idea writers can always work with. ✏️What I like to do is to have a point A and a point B for each arc/chapter. This gives me an idea of where I am now and where my end goal is. But I do not know the corse of events that the story will take to reach that end goal. My characters are growing and changing with the plot, and being a Pantser gives me more freedom of choice. As writing proceeds, a lot of things change in the process, and not having an outline helps prevent unnecessary stress. The closest thing I have to an "outline" is a breakdown of my already written chapter with a small summary/bullet points. That way, I don't have to re-read the entire draft to know where I am at in the story😅 ❗️But as a writer, there is no right or wrong way to plotting. Write your story the way YOU want and the way it is most helpful to YOU. ❓️Are you a Pantser or an Outliner? Share tips that help your writing! Happy writing!✍️🏻 My WIP: So... 🚨 Don’t do this!! We all want to create jaw-dropping plot twists, right? But sometimes, in our excitement to shock readers, we accidentally break their trust instead. Not good! Here are some ways that can happen: 😬 ❌ The twist comes out of absolutely nowhere. Plot twists should feel surprising yet inevitable. If your twist has no buildup or foreshadowing, it risks feeling random—like it was thrown in for shock value rather than to elevate the story. ❌ The twist breaks the story’s logic. Consistency is key. If your twist contradicts the rules of your world or character motivations, it can leave readers feeling frustrated instead of impressed. ❌ It undermines character arcs. A twist that ignores or erases your characters’ growth can feel cheap. Readers emotionally invest in your characters—don’t leave them feeling like that journey was pointless. ✅ What to do instead: 1️⃣ Foreshadow cleverly. Plant subtle clues that readers might miss on the first read but will recognize in hindsight. A great twist rewards careful readers. 2️⃣ Stay true to your story. Ask yourself (and get beta reader to confirm!): does this twist feel natural within the world and the character dynamics I’ve created? If not, it might need reworking. 3️⃣ Ensure it drives the story forward. The best twists don’t just shock—they create new stakes, deepen conflicts, or reveal hidden truths that keep readers hooked. ✨ Want help plotting your book’s twists and turns out? When your characters decide the plot is *optional* and suddenly, you’re knee-deep in plot holes you never planned for... 🤦‍♀️ Writers, raise your hand if your characters have ever completely derailed your story! 😂✋ I have yet to find that perfect balance between giving my characters the freedom they beg for and making sure they remain on plot and in-character in the first draft. #authorsofinstagram #writingcommunity #booksbooksbooks #amwriting #bookcommunity #writersofig #writerslife #writersofinstagram #writer #igreads #booksofinstagram #booknerd #writerscommunity #authorlife #bookish
