Can You Now Search Google in Yoruba or Hausa? @google has expanded its AI-powered search capabilities to support Yorùbá and Hausa, increasing the number of African languages supported by its AI search tools to 13. The update allows users to access AI Overviews and AI Mode in their native languages, making it easier to get quick summaries, explanations, and conversational answers directly from search results. This move is part of Google’s broader push to improve AI accessibility across Africa, where language barriers have often limited the use of digital tools. With the update, a trader in Ibadan can search for business tips in Yorùbá, while a student in Kano can ask research questions in Hausa. According to Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s communications and public affairs manager for West Africa, the update goes beyond simple translation. The company’s custom version of Gemini in Search helps the AI better understand local languages, culture, and context to deliver more relevant results. Google says its AI-powered search features now support several African languages, including Afrikaans, Akan, Amharic, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, Somali, Sesotho, Kiswahili, Setswana, Wolof, Yorùbá, and isiZulu.
