🚨 Trimming Before Positioning!
Before you start cutting, always make sure your dog is standing in a natural, balanced position. If they’re sitting, leaning, or shifting their weight, it can throw off the symmetry of the haircut. You might think you’re cutting evenly, but once they stand properly, one side could end up way shorter than you intended!
🚨 Lifting the Foot to Set the Shape
When setting the shape of your dog’s foot, always let the foot rest naturally on the table. Trimming in the air might seem easier, but once the dog puts their foot back down, the pressure from the toes causes the foot to spread out. This will lead to an uneven shape and exposed toes. Once your shape is set, you can pick up the feet to smooth and round the edges!
🚨 Not Fully Drying the Coat Before Grooming!
If you’re not fully drying the coat before grooming, you’re setting yourself up for a choppy, uneven trim. Damp hair doesn’t cut the same way as dry hair—it sticks together and lays differently, so you might take off too much or too little without realizing it. Without fully drying, the hair will shrink, curl, or fluff up unevenly, making the groom look messy. To get a smooth, even finish, always make sure the coat is completely dry before you start cutting!
🚨 Not Blending After Setting Shape!
When you set a shape or length on a dog, you’re always going to end up with some harsh lines. After you’ve made your cut, always go back and blend those lines by cutting with the direction of the hair growth. This softens the edges and gives the groom a soft, natural look.
