DETransitioning to being in an open relationship is challenging, even for those who strongly identify with non-monogamy. Not only does it involve a significant amount of unlearning and deprogramming from monogamous conditioning, but an open relationship can also surface wounds and insecurities you didn’t know you had. This is because your nervous system is regulated to the monogamous paradigm, which offers a false sense of security, and suddenly you find yourself being deeply triggered by jealousy.
It’s not enough to intellectually understand and identify as polyamorous; you have to somatically unlearn monogamy and learn how to regulate jealousy and heal core wounds.
Jealousy is your companion into shadow work. It is important to offer yourself grace and compassion as you calm your nervous system and increase your distress tolerance. This process can take time. While most people can transition into polyamorous relationships with the right support and commitment to personal growth, individuals with severe trauma may find managing jealousy extremely challenging. For them, remaining in exclusive relationships might be preferable.
