It’s a frosty frigid morning and that means it’s time to add an extra layer of protection to the polytunnel crops. ❄️ It’s quick and easy to create low tunnels over the beds using lengths of #9 wire bent into U shapes. 5 tips I've learned since I started growing my own veg 🥦 Start small and only grow what you will use to avoid waste! It's easy to get carried away. And, it can become a big task keeping them alive and a little overwhelming. The best time to water your plants is in the morning when temperatures are usually cooler (or late in the afternoon). I learned this the hard way! This gives the plants time to absorb the water so they can get through a long, hot day. 🌿 Directly water the soil surface at the roots and avoid wetting leaves because water helps spread some plant diseases like mildew. My poor courgette plant suffered badly from this last year 🙈 I used to use a sprinkle head on my watering can! Fertilize the soil to replenish the nutrients. Coffee contains a lot of micronutrients and can be used as an organic fertilizer for plants. It can also be used as mulch and added to your compost too. Most coffee shops will give you coffee grinds for free ☕️ you can also buy fertilizer if easier. Use quality soil! This is so important. Poor soil won't produce good crops, it's as simple as that. I've tried 😅 and it's much better to get professional advice and pick the right one. I'm still very much learning as I go!
