TOOnce in a while we like to bring this video back so more people can learn about this trick.
One of my tried and true clay reclaim routines. I gather the leather-hard trimmings and dip some of them in throwing water. Then, I put them all in a clay bag and step on it to remove any air pockets and homogenize the texture of the clay. When I need to use the clay, I place the slab on a plaster board, and wait a few hours to a day for any excess moisture to be drawn out before wedging the clay and throw with it. This approach is perfect when you don’t have the luxury of space. It works best when the clay trimmings are still leather hard. Mixing trimmings of different dryness will obviously affect the consistency. But I’ll take ease and a bit of extra wedging over soaking dry clay and drying out slurry any day. Would you give this a try?

WIRare (for me) white firing wild clay tumbler. I almost never make pieces entirely from this clay; it’s more of an accent item, typically. It’s far harder to dig than my normal clay, being in a creek, under the ledge of the bank. Processing it yields much less clay too; it’s about 50% sand. On the wheel, this clay is far less forgiving and requires a delicate touch. Because it has quite a lot of fine silt even after processing, the clay is somewhat thixotropic, going from firm to incredibly soft as soon as water is added. On the upside, this clay is sooo smooth and will result in a buttery soft feeling fired piece that will stand out in stark contrast to my other work. If all goes well, it should come out of the kiln a brilliant white color.

HIHere is another process video of the same 🌼 🌧️ design that I decorated a bulbous cup with but this time on a waisted mug for #mugshotmonday.
The negative space on these concave or “waisted” shaped mugs allows space for this loop handle to tuck tightly to the mug and makes a comfortable and balanced two finger hold.
With soft, tender curves I try to allude to an organic plant like structure and new leaf growth while creating a comfortable and recognizable handle. Particularly the node or the connection of the leaf to the stem of a plant. 🌱 🌿
