🚽 Potty Training + the Interoception Sense 🚽 🧠 Interoception is the 8th sense of the body and it is the sense that allows us to tune in to our internal bodily sensations and identify how we feel physically, emotionally and mentally. Why is Interoception such an important sense when it comes to potty training? Many potty training programs overlook interoception, which helps recognize bodily signals such as a full bladder, essential for understanding when to use the toilet. Interoception plays a vital role in teaching kids to notice and respond to their toileting needs, beyond just compliance or rewarding with stickers. Developing this skill is crucial for successful and independent toileting. ⤵️ Here are 4 steps to improve the interoception sense to lead to improved potty training outcomes: ⭐ 1) Model interoceptive awareness: Share your feelings and bodily sensations that lead to them. For instance, explain a tight stomach or the urge to push when you need the bathroom, or a dry, scratchy mouth when you’re thirsty. ⭐ 2) Discuss your child's feelings and body signals: Encourage them to describe physical sensations associated with their feelings, like a growling stomach when hungry or the need to go to the bathroom soon after they’ve just been. ⭐ 3) Adapt to your child's needs: Use different methods like visual schedules or setting alarms to remind them of bathroom breaks. Reading stories about toilet use can also help establish regular habits. ⭐ 4) Make learning about feelings a game: Play a game where you and your children describe how emotions feel in the body, like urgency for the bathroom or butterflies for anxiety. Focus on helping them connect physical sensations to emotions. We’re heading into a three-day weekend, which means a lot of you might take the opportunity to do some potty training. Here are some things to keep in mind: 🚽 It takes longer than three days (based on the data!) 🚽 Your child will have trouble staying dry at night. 🚽 Poop sometimes comes later than pee – this is common, you just have to work through it. “This is just a phase” can be one of the most detrimental beliefs a parent can hold on to when stuck on the poop-struggle bus. When your child is withholding poop, time is not on your side. What seems like a quirky phase can quickly spiral into chronic constipation, encopresis, fear, and full-blown toilet refusal — leaving you feeling helpless and your child stuck in a constant state of distress. 💡 The truth? Kids don’t grow out of poop struggles. They grow into them… unless you intervene effectively. If you’ve tried all the rewards, bribes, and sticker charts (maybe even laxatives) and your kiddo is still stuck… it’s because you’re missing the most important thing that will actually get your kiddo running to the toilet when the urge hits. I’m unpacking this for you in my next live 3-day event “Poop Without Panic”. I’m going to show you what’s keeping your kiddo stuck in those dreadful poop-withholding patterns and then uncover the process that makes regular & drama-free poops inevitable. This is your path to the poop-breakthrough you’ve been so desperately waiting for! ✅ Things I would definitely do if I were potty training a child as a pediatric OT: 1. Go through a potty learning phase first! 🚽 Filled with reading potty books, bringing my child into the bathroom with me, talking about the sensations, and associating pee/poop with the bathroom! 2. Always providing good foot support with a toddler potty or stool! This is important for relaxing the muscles and helping a child feel more secure!🦶🏼 3. Consistently making sure my child is drinking enough water + eating a good variety of fruits & vegetables for fiber to prevent constipation! 💩 4. Have bubbles, straws, or the breathing ball available to teach belly breathing and relaxation to success releases on the toilet! 🫧 🚽 Remember - every child develops differently and has unique needs, interests, and sensory preferences. You know your child best. Look out for signs of readiness and start when both your child AND you are ready 🫶🏼 🚽🌟Are you needing guidance with this? When it comes to peeing outside during potty training, I had to set a boundary otherwise my boys would just pee everywhere. We created a “pee spot” in our yard so that there was some privacy and I would know where I needed to hose off later 🤣 When we were in public I told them that if there was not a bathroom around then they could pee behind a bush or tree.
