Siena reminded me yesterday that it is 3 days until her birthday. When she said that I had an odd thought. This is the day I went the hospital not knowing it would turn into 3 days of observation, an emergency c-section, and a month in the NICU. I didn’t know what was up ahead, but God did. I didn’t know I would wade through postpartum depression, that came with an immense amount of shame and guilt. I didn’t know I would struggle to “keep up,” and get back to “normal” for years. Buy God knew. He also knew I would cling to him through my deepest valleys. He would bring me up out of the valley. Yes, everything would be different, but it would be better than I planned. And then I would tell you about it. In the hopes that you would see those valleys, and not just the mountain tops. That someone would stumble across this page, this post, and be encouraged in this moment. Let me assure you that you will heal. You will never go back to “normal” because you will have a new normal. If you are open to it, you will find it is even better than what you had before. Many things will not go as planned, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be wonderful. Some days will truly just be rough. You will feel like you failed and you are free falling. However, that Is where God catches you. Whether it is through a friend, a podcast, or just any random moment. He has always found a way to get my attention even in the worst of situations. Of course there are days where I “wish” I did better, or “wonder” what things would have been like with a “normal” birth story. However, I am confident his plans are not only greater for me, but my daughter as well. He has certainly turned my ashes into something beautiful over and over again. As challenging as life can and will be, our story is such a blessing to me. I share it as I pray it blesses someone else out there scrolling Instagram wondering what happened and if God sees them, he does <3 #dishspiration #atthekitchensink #postpartumjourney #ppdawareness #momsencouragingmoms

I was talking about PPA/PPD on my stories the other day and shared my experience using certain tools to support my mental health. I was inspired to hear from the many women on here who also sought help for their PPA/PPD and wanted to keep the conversation going. For many new moms, the ways we used to self regulate our nervous system like with meditation, yoga, walking…therapy… are not readily options when you’re caring for littles—nor are those always affective strategies for treating debilitating anxiety that can come with being a first time mom. If you’re in the trenches and stumble upon this video, please know you are not alone and there is no shame is asking for help. There is relief. There is support. You do not have to keep it to yourself. You do not have to white knuckle it. However you choose to support yourself, you are not alone! #postpartumdepression #postpartumanxiety #postpartumanxietyawareness #ppa #ppdawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #twinmom #firsttimemom #fourthtrimester

Delusions, hallucinations & paranoia are hallmark symptoms of postpartum psychosis, but not always the first to appear. Postpartum psychosis is the most severe & dangerous mental health condition that typically occurs on the first months postpartum. The early signs can look similar to depression or anxiety, but these 3 signs are 🚩🚩🚩 🚨Decreased Need for Sleep - Most new moms are so exhausted from newborn care & should be able to fall asleep easily when given the chance. If a woman does not feel like she needs as much sleep & still has good energy, that’s a big concern!! Going 48hrs+ without sleep is a HUGE 🚩 🚨Change in Activity & Energy Level - This can be hyperactivity, restlessness, lethargy, psychomotor slowing or even catatonia. Sometimes activity & energy level fluctuates over the course of hours to days.🚩 🚨Fluctuating Mental Status - AKA delirium. Mom might seem totally fine & connected to reality at some parts of the day,, then appear confused, disoriented or disconnected at other times.🚩 If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, PLEASE get help ASAP! t’s important to seek professional help immediately. PPP is treatable with the right support and care, but requires an emergent evaluation and usually an inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. And check out my recent YouTube interview with my friend Kody Green @schizophrenichippie to learn even more about PPP! Hitting Snooze 😴 on Visitors ( especially the Unplanned Ones! 😌) Don't get us wrong, those "I can't wait to hold your baby" texts are really heartwarming but New Parents need time and space.... Here's why 👇 👉 Adjusting Period: Newborn care is a total shift in parents' lives. Delaying visitors helps them adjust to the new routine and share responsibilities. 👉 Rest and Recovery: The postpartum period is a time for the mother's body to heal. Whether it's a vaginal or C-section delivery, both require physical recovery. Delaying visitors allows for more sleep and less exertion 👉 Bonding with Baby: Those early days are crucial for establishing a strong bond between parent and baby. Newborns need frequent feeding and soothing. 👉 Breastfeeding Success: Establishing breastfeeding can be challenging in the beginning. The relaxed atmosphere with fewer visitors allows for more frequent feeding attempts and helps regulate the milk supply. 👉 Parents' Emotional Well-being: Let's be honest, postpartum is difficult and the parents may go through some emotional challenges. Delaying visitors gives them the space and privacy to cope. If you're expecting a baby, it's important to communicate your wishes to friends and family about visitors. 💙 This is another reason why Postpartum Planning is really important, it helps you feel more prepared and confident in your new role as parents.
