HEThrown into practicum like a human cannonball. 😵💫
It’s basically a therapy student version of “sink or swim” — spoiler: I dog paddled and cried on the way home.😫
I remember walking into those first sessions in a community mental health center serving folks with severe mental illness who were largely homeless or drug addicted in a rough part of Fresno, CA. I felt completely inadequate. I questioned everything — what I said, what I didn’t say, if I was doing more harm than good. And I really wondered: Is it supposed to feel this shaky? I was SO anxious before every single session.
If you’ve been there (or are currently there), here’s what I want you to know:
💬 If practicum ever made you question your entire existence as a future therapist — you’re not alone. You’re just early in the story.
💬 It’s okay if you didn’t feel ready. Most of us didn’t. But these experiences ARE valuable in your process.
💬 To the interns white-knuckling your way through sessions wondering if this is normal — it is. Keep going.
You don’t have to have it all figured out to be an incredible therapist in the making. ❤️
