After the word TO, do we use a base verb or an ING verb? There’s a common misconception that we always use the base verb after TO, while ING verbs only follow other prepositions. However, that isn’t the case! After prepositional phrases, we use an ING verb whether the preposition is TO, FOR, OF, or any other. The same applies to adjective phrases with adjective + TO, like used to or addicted to. On the other hand, TO is followed by the base verb when it’s part of the infinitive. For example, when showing purpose (I called you to tell you something), after certain verbs (want, need), or after adjectives (it’s easy to do, it’s hard to see). So, it depends on whether TO is functioning as a preposition in a phrase, or as part of the infinitive.

A preposition is a word that links a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to other words in a sentence, showing relationships such as location, time, direction, or cause. It usually comes before its object (a noun or pronoun) and forms a prepositional phrase. Key points about prepositions: • They must have an object (noun or pronoun) following them. • The pronoun after a preposition should be in the objective case (e.g., me, him, her). • Prepositions show relationships like place (in, on, at), time (before, after, during), direction (to, toward), cause, and manner. • Prepositions can be single words (in, on, at) or phrases (according to, because of). • They never take a verb as their object. Examples: • She is in the room. • We met after the meeting. • The gift is from him. • He walked toward the park. Common prepositions include: in, on, at, by, for, from, to, with, about, under, over, between, during, until, since, among, beside, across, behind, near, without, and many more. Summary: Prepositions connect nouns or pronouns to other parts of the sentence to show how they relate in terms of place, time, direction, or other relationships. #ielts #learnenglish #studyabroad #englishlearning #ieltspreparation #studyincanada #englishteacher #vocabulary #englishgrammar #esl #studyinuk #internationalstudents #speakenglish #englishcourse #toefl #ieltsexam #englishvocabulary #grammar #studyvisa #englishclass #ieltswriting #ieltstips #englishlanguage #studentvisa #language
