Homemade chewing gum 🍬🛞 Disclaimer: this is a funny video- nothing more, nothing less. I did not chew this gum. This is a demonstration of the industrial processing steps used in mass-produced chewing gum. This video is for entertainment and educational purposes only- do not replicate these steps at home. This video does not claim that chewing mainstream gum will directly harm you. It’s meant to shed light on how highly processed everyday foods can be- especially when mass-produced for consistency, cost-cutting, and shelf stability. When making gum they’re not literally melting down tires and engine lubricant in the factory- they source food-grade versions of synthetic rubber, petroleum waxes, resins, sweeteners, and dyes from industrial suppliers. We also did not recreate any specific branded gum here- this is based on what the most popular gums on the market typically contain, according to publicly available ingredient lists. This video is describing the general process of making modern chewing gum in a way that can be done on a small scale at home, BUT is not mirroring the exact process- it’s optimized to make a watchable video- real plants use specialized equipment, proprietary formulations, testing, and controls… things that are not shown here. The goal is to visualize the chain of production- not mirror any exact factory process. When food additives and synthetic gum bases are described as “safe,” remember that we often lack long-term studies on their full effects. Recent research also shows that chewing gum can shed hundreds to thousands of micro- and nanoplastic particles. While some of these ingredients may be “generally recognized as safe” in small amounts, I personally see no benefit in consuming them at all. At the end of the day, eat/chew what you want- but be informed about what you’re actually eating.

This is what a good ML portfolio project should have. Showcase the process of data collection and storage, especially if you’re doing the collection part yourself. Explain the sources you used to get data and why. Data preprocessing and feature engineering. It’s a dirty job, but also the most important job you’ll do. Make it count. Model training and testing. Train, validate, test, and address any overfitting and other issues that may arise. Model deployment. Use an API or build an end-to-end app. Make sure to present your result in an analytical and presentable manner so the “stakeholders” can see what results you achieved. Building your first data and ML project for the portfolio is nowhere near easy, but I hope that this guide simplified the process. If you’re just starting with data science and machine learning and need a roadmap that can help you follow the process and keep yourself accountable, comment “ML” and I’ll send you my machine learning engineer + MLOps roadmap. Highly intelligent people often enjoy their own company because their brains are constantly processing, analyzing, and thinking deeply. Social interactions can feel draining since small talk or meaningless chatter doesn’t stimulate them the way ideas and reflection do. Shredding an image into smaller pieces is a simple and effective way to understand the idea behind downsampling. When an image is physically cut apart and each small section is viewed on its own, the fine details disappear while the broader shapes and colors remain. This mirrors what happens digitally when an image is reduced in resolution. The computer keeps the essential structure but removes the smaller patterns that the human eye is less likely to notice at a smaller size. In digital processing, downsampling works by averaging or resampling pixels to create a more compact version of the original. The goal is to retain the overall composition while reducing the amount of information stored. Just like a tiny piece of a shredded photo still reflects the general look of the original image, a downsampled picture keeps the important visual cues while letting go of minor details. This maintains clarity while saving space and processing power. Using a physical demonstration like shredding makes a technical concept easier to grasp. It provides a visual and tactile comparison that connects a familiar action to a digital process. Many people understand an idea more quickly when they can see it rather than just read an explanation. By turning downsampling into something you can hold in your hand, the concept becomes more intuitive and helps bridge the gap between everyday experiences and digital image science. #Preprocessing Reel by @marinunesnutrition (verified account) - Your total daily energy expenditure comes from three main processes, and understanding them helps you know exactly where your results come from.

Your total daily energy expenditure comes from three main processes, and understanding them helps you know exactly where your results come from. 1️⃣ Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): This is the energy your body uses just to stay alive. Even if you stayed in bed all day, your heart, brain, lungs, liver, and cells would still need energy to function. About 60 to 70 percent of the calories you burn daily come from this. For example, a person who burns 2000 calories a day uses around 1300 just to keep basic functions running. Having more muscle increases your BMR because muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue. 2️⃣ Thermic Effect of Food (TEF): This is the energy your body spends digesting, absorbing, and processing the nutrients you eat. It represents about 10 percent of your total calories. Protein has the highest thermic effect because your body uses more energy to break it down compared to carbs or fats. This is one reason why higher-protein diets can slightly increase total energy expenditure. 3️⃣ Physical Activity: This includes two parts: structured exercise like weight training or cardio, and all the movement you do during the day that is not exercise, such as walking, standing, cleaning, or fidgeting. The second part is called NEAT, short for non-exercise activity thermogenesis. Two people with similar workouts can burn very different amounts of calories per day just because one moves more outside the gym. Training builds muscle, improves metabolic efficiency, and increases energy burned even at rest. Long periods of sitting, on the other hand, lower mitochondrial activity and reduce total energy use over time. 📖 Reference: Müller MJ, et al. “Metabolic adaptation to caloric restriction and subsequent refeeding: the Minnesota Starvation Experiment revisited.” Am J Clin Nutr. 2015;102(4):807-819.
