This pre-pitch motion can be referred to as:

๐ฆถ๐ฝprep-step
๐ฆถ๐ฝsplit-step
This is so easy to do, but WHY do we do this?
This movement occurs so our feet are setting as the pitch crosses the plate
This allows us to be light in our feet and have the best reaction time possible
Split-step is common terminology in tennis, and thatโs really what the infielders are doing
This little hop at the end allows the feet to land at the same time
Which gives equal reaction time to our left and right
Rather if our last step is right, our body would want to move left
And vice versa
But bottom line, this is such an easy thing to implement
If you arenโt doing this, youโre really being LAZY
And robbing yourself range to move more plays for your team
