1. They ask irrelevant personal questions: “Are you married?” “Planning to marry?” “Pregnant?” What does your marital status have to do with your skills and qualifications? A professional workplace should have policies that accommodate life events like marriage and childbirth, not screen people out because of them. 2. They avoid discussing salary and benefits: They say things like: “You’ll see it in the offer.” The salary does not have social anxiety. If it’s competitive, they should be able to discuss it openly so you can negotiate or make an informed decision. Avoidance often means underpayment, unclear structure, or expectations that don’t match the pay. 3. Your interview is scheduled on a public holiday or odd hours: Run oh. This is lack of boundaries. If they disregard your time now, don’t expect them to respect it when you start working. Except you’re interviewing with an international company that doesn’t know about your national holidays or in a different time zone (you can even send a mail to reschedule if the time is unfavorable). 4. They can’t clearly explain their company culture: You ask about culture and hear: “We’re like a family here…” or vague, recycled answers. Your family is at home, your boss is not your father. A solid company should be able to clearly explain how they work, how decisions are made, and how people are treated. 5. They rely on informal communication for core work: “If you get the job, we mostly use WhatsApp.” Except it’s a very informal business, this is a red flag. Serious organizations use structured channels like email or internal tools like slack or teams. 6. The role is unclear or keeps expanding during the interview: You applied for one role… now it’s becoming three. “You’ll also handle this, and support this team too…” This often means role ambiguity, work overload and no clear expectations. 7. The interviewer is disorganized or unprepared: They haven’t reviewed your CV, they’re late without explanation, or they seem unsure about the role.
