However, it’s only recently that scientific and clinical studies have begun to establish the powerful relationship between eating highly processed foods and mental health disorders. Alterations in mitochondria, likely represent the bridge between these two factors. - There is an abundance of data showing the eating mostly unprocessed or minimally processed foods has a positive effect on mental health. - Of course, results such as these are correlative. There are a lot of lifestyle issues that likely accompany the consumption of highly processed foods or the avoidance of them for that matter . - Dr. Chris Palmer is a psychiatrist working at Harvard. He is pioneering the new field of metabolic psychiatry, which is the use of specific nutritional programs to treat and in some cases cure, mental health disorders. - This is his second time on the Huberman Lab podcast and the episode covers entirely new content. The truth about ultra-processed foods. Ultra-processed foods are a hot topic right now, and unfortunately they are VERY misunderstood. One particularly tricky issue is that there is debate whether the term “ultra-processed” is even useful. If you ask 100 people to classify different foods, many of them will not pick the same categories. So whilst some foods seem obvious (Oreos, Twinkies, Jaffa Cakes, etc), some foods are much less obvious, like bread. This makes it tricky to talk about on social media because if you say “not all ultra-processed foods are unhealthy” some people automatically misinterpret what you are saying and think you are implying a diet high in Oreos is nutritious (which it is not). The term “ultra-processed” should not automatically be synonymous with “everything in this umbrella is equally deleterious for your health”. And that is one reason why talking about this on social media is hard. The point is this: you do NOT need to fear them and these foods can be eaten in the RIGHT context. Most foods don’t become “bad” just because they’re processed. Any food can become problematic when they’re over consumed or when they crowd out variety in the diet. ☝🏼 Fun fact: Almost all foods are processed to a certain degree. 😬 Yes, there are more nutritious and less nutritious processed foods but all of them can still have a place, especially when access, shelf life, safety and convenience are important considerations. Fresh food is great, but it is not always realistic for everyone, every day. Instead of labelling these foods as unhealthy or processed, a more helpful approach is asking: how can we make them better? For example, instant noodles (with less seasoning to control the sodium) paired with some vegetables and a protein source can become a more balanced meal. 🙌🏼 And I love frozen fruits/veg! It is such a convenient option to help Malaysians eat more vegetables esp when 95% of us dont eat enough! 👊🏼 Questions?
