EVSemana Santa, or Holy Week, is a significant religious event in Valencia, Spain, and is celebrated with various rituals and traditions. One of the important aspects of Semana Santa in Valencia is the use of elaborate costumes worn by the participants in the processions.
The costumes worn during Semana Santa in Valencia are known as “nazarenos,” and they consist of a tunic, a hood with a conical tip, and a cape. The colors of the tunic and cape vary depending on the brotherhood or cofradía to which the participant belongs. The most common colors are purple, black, and white.
The use of the nazareno costume has a symbolic significance. The conical hood, called a “capirote,” represents the penitence and humility of the wearer, who covers his or her face to avoid drawing attention to themselves. The cape symbolizes the cloak of charity that should cover the sins of the penitent.
The nazarenos also carry candles or processional crosses and walk in procession through the streets of Valencia, following the floats or “pasos” that depict scenes from the Passion of Christ. The participants sing hymns and pray as they walk, creating a solemn and reverent atmosphere.
Overall, the costume of the nazareno is an important aspect of the Semana Santa celebrations in Valencia, as it represents the penitence, humility, and charity that are central to the religious event.

PEAlleluia - it’s Semana Santa - holy week for the Catholics
Here’s a new film I made last year in Sevilla, over a few strange days trying to capture the essence of something deeply old. Am very happy with it, you can watch it on YouTube through the link in bio.
And here are a few words about it:
« We’d been told: if it rained, the icons would stay inside. No processions. The skies needed to be clear over Seville.
Jesús was my guide — a gentle musician, a friend, someone who knew the world of the hermandades with a kind of quiet detachment, as if he’d grown up near it, not within it.
We thought we’d drift through the week lightly, but things took a different turn. A brief illness kept me indoors, and the rain followed. In the streets, people turned their faces away when a brotherhood, at the last minute, chose not to open its doors. Their Marys, their Jesuses, their heavy pasos — swaying sculptures carried by unseen shoulders — stayed in the shadows.
Day after grey day, we gathered what we could. A few quiet prayers. A few crosses. A few talismans. Not much. A modest attempt to touch the sacred.
And then — I think it was the last day — the sky lifted suddenly above the church of the Hermandad de la Trinidad. The voice of the capataz came first, calling out to guide a weighty, sightless structure into motion. The paso began to sway, and with it, my camera.
Behind me, the band rose. The procession unfolded — deliberate, immense. And for a while, we were all carried by it. Crossed hands, shadowed faces, slow steps drawn into the Sevillian night.
This is how the film begins. A quiet trace of another time, briefly opened.
