πŸŒ•πŸ“Έ Artemis II Saw Earthrise From Behind The Moon Artemis II just sent home lunar flyby photos that show Earth rising above the Moon's far side from a crewed spacecraft for the first time in more than 50 years. The images came during the crew's seven-hour swing around the far side on April 6, 2026, when Orion slipped behind the Moon and lost contact with Earth for about 40 minutes. One frame shows a thin blue crescent Earth hanging over rugged terrain near Ohm crater, while another records a total solar eclipse with a glowing halo around the dark lunar disk. NASA says the crew also photographed impact craters, ancient lava flows, surface fractures, and six meteoroid impact flashes on the shadowed surface. That matters because these are not postcard shots alone; the colors, shadows, textures, and geometry give scientists fresh clues about how the Moon's crust formed and changed over time. The eclipse view matters too, because Orion's position let the astronauts watch nearly 54 minutes of totality and capture a perspective that is impossible from the ground. Artemis II was a test flight, but it already turned the Moon back into a place humans can observe directly instead of only through robotic passes and distant telescopes. If this is what one flyby produced, later Artemis missions could return with even richer surface views, better field observations, and a much sharper picture of the world we are heading back to. The Artemis II crew didn't just break Apollo 13's 56-year distance record today. They're beaming back 4K crystal-clear video of the Moon's surface using revolutionary laser technology from MIT. For the first time in human history, we're seeing the Moon's mysterious far side in stunning detailβ€”craters so sharp you can almost feel them. [^0^] "It's like we're a bunch of little kids up here," said Commander Reid Wiseman. "We cannot get enough of this. What is your thought on this!? NASA’s Artemis II crew has reportedly captured something they weren’t expecting during their historic lunar flyby β€” movement on the Moon. As the Orion spacecraft, β€œIntegrity,” passed behind the Moon, astronauts observed what appeared to be a mysterious object moving across the lunar surface in a region long believed to be completely still and inactive. This wasn’t a glitch. It wasn’t space debris drifting in orbit. According to early reports, the motion appeared to be happening *on* the surface itself β€” raising serious questions. NASA experts are now analyzing footage and sensor data, but so far, no official explanation has been confirmed. Naturally, the internet is split. Some believe it could be a rare geological event… others aren’t so convinced. Because here’s the thing β€” the Moon isn’t supposed to move like that. So what did they really see? New Crew Video: Earthset from Orion Spacecraft | NASA Artemis II Moon Mission FriendsofNASA.org | Artemis II commander and NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman: "Only one chance in this lifetime . . . Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos. I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as Christina Koch is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. Victor Glover was in window 3 watching with Jeremy Hansen next to him. I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view . . . this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy." The Artemis II Mission wrapped up a historic seven-hour lunar flyby on April 6, 2026, marking humanity’s first return to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972 and capturing images of the lunar far side. During their nearly 10-day mission, the crew completed a record-setting lunar flyby, taking them 252,756 miles at their farthest distance from Earth and 4,067 miles above the lunar surface at their closest approach. The first crewed test flight of NASA’s Artemis program lifted off Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 1, 2026, carrying the first astronauts to travel to the Moon in more than half a century. Artemis II splashed down on April 10 in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego. Following splashdown and recovery, the four crew members underwent post-mission medical evaluations before returning to shore and boarding an aircraft bound for Houston. Upon arrival, the crew was welcomed by and reunited with their families, friends, and agency workforce. Learn more about NASA's Artemis II Mission: https://lnkd.in/g9T4urZJ Credit: NASA/JSC/R. Our Artemis II crew will be going around the Moon... but they’ll always find their way back home 🌎 During this complex and far-reaching journey, the four crew members will travel ~685,000 miles looping around the Moon and back to Earth in a span of about 10-days. The mission follows a free-return trajectory that uses the gravity of the Earth and Moon to naturally guide the crew home. During the mission, the astronauts are going to get a unique perspective of the Moon while testing Orion’s systems and performing science operations. The Artemis II mission is an important step in humanity’s return to deep space exploration. It is part of the Artemis program led by NASA. Artemis II will be the first crewed mission of the program, sending astronauts around the Moon without landing on its surface. The mission will use the powerful Space Launch System rocket to carry the spacecraft into space. The astronauts will travel inside the Orion spacecraft, which is specially designed for long-distance missions. This journey will test life-support systems, navigation, and communication in deep space. The mission will orbit the Moon and then safely return to Earth. Artemis II aims to ensure that all systems are ready for future lunar landings. It will help scientists understand how humans can live and work beyond Earth. The crew will experience the effects of deep space travel for the first time since the Apollo program. This mission is expected to inspire a new generation of space explorers. It also strengthens international partnerships in space exploration. Artemis II plays a key role in preparing for Artemis III, which will land humans on the Moon. The mission highlights advancements in technology and safety. It also focuses on sustainability for long-term space missions. Astronauts will conduct tests and gather important data throughout the journey. The mission shows humanity’s ambition to explore further into space. Artemis II represents a major milestone in modern space history. It brings us one step closer to exploring Mars in the future. Overall, Artemis II is a symbol of innovation, courage, and human curiosity. #SpaceExploration #nasa #artemis2 #apollo11 #astronomy
