JOIncredible (ans rare) proton aurora, brighter than a full moon, pulses across the energy-laden night sky, brightening up the whole landscape for a few seconds at the time. This phenomenon is actually quite interesting, with a different origin story than your usual green auroras. These bright patches of intense green form because of dislodged protons, that get flung out of earth‘s proton ring (a ring-like structure around the planet in space) by strong geomagnetic storming. Like the electrons from the solar wind currents, these protons then collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere and excite them into emitting some light. Basically a very similar process than your regular aurora, but with particles that are quite literally the opposite of each other. This was a very cool and also quite weird looking thing to watch, I have personally never witnessed aurora behave that way, and now you know why! 😁

NEO acidente de Anatoli Bugorski é um dos episódios mais surreais da história da ciência, ocorrendo em 13 de julho de 1978, na antiga União Soviética.
Ele é a única pessoa conhecida a ter sido atingida diretamente na cabeça por um feixe de um acelerador de partículas.
Bugorski era um pesquisador no Instituto de Física de Alta Energia em Protvino. Enquanto verificava uma falha em um equipamento do acelerador U-70 synchrotron, os mecanismos de segurança falharam.
No momento em que ele se inclinou para inspecionar o interior, sua cabeça cruzou o caminho de um feixe de prótons de 76 GeV.
Ele relatou não ter sentido dor imediata, mas viu um clarão “mais brilhante que mil sóis”. O feixe atravessou a parte de trás de sua cabeça, os lobos cerebrais e o ouvido, saindo perto do nariz. Estima-se que a entrada tenha recebido 200.000 rads e a saída 300.000 rads (uma dose letal padrão é de cerca de 400 a 1.000 rads).
Embora os médicos esperassem que ele morresse em poucos dias devido ao inchaço cerebral massivo e à descamação da pele, Bugorski sobreviveu de forma impressionante.
As principais sequelas foram:
-O lado esquerdo de seu rosto ficou permanentemente paralisado devido à destruição dos nervos.
-Ele perdeu a audição no ouvido esquerdo.
-Passou a sofrer de convulsões ocasionais e episódios de fadiga intelectual.
Efeito estético curioso, como os nervos do lado esquerdo foram destruídos, essa parte do seu rosto parou de envelhecer, permanecendo sem rugas décadas depois.
Incrivelmente, sua capacidade intelectual permaneceu intacta. Ele concluiu seu doutorado e continuou trabalhando como físico de partículas. O acidente foi mantido em segredo pelo governo soviético por mais de uma década.
