Post the word PRUNE for my free winter pruning checklist! ❄️ ✂️🍎🌳 Pruning an apple tree isn’t a one-time thing—it’s a journey! 🌱 Here’s how I’ve shaped my trees over 5 years: ✅ 📍 Year 1: Make the heading cut to establish low scaffold branches 🌿✂️ 📍 Year 2: Thin scaffold branches & start building good angles 🌳📐 📍 Year 3: Chose final branches & continue thinning for structure 🏗️🍎 📍 Year 4: Another head cut to shape the modified central leader 🌲🔄 📍 Year 5: More thinning cuts & finally get ready for FRUIT! 🍏🎉 Pruning takes patience, but the reward is a strong, productive tree! 🌳💪 Have questions? Drop them below! ⬇️ And let me know what other trees you’d like me to cover next! 👇 #fruitpruning #appletrees #orchardlife #gardeningtips #backyardorchard #homegrownfruit #organicgardening #pruningseason #fruitgrowers #treesofinstagram #growyourownfood #homesteadgardening #winterpruning #fruittreecare #homeorchard #growyourown #backyardgardening #foodforest #treetraining #sustainableliving #fruittreesinmybackyard #fruittrees #pruning #homesteading #prune #gardening #orchard #fruittree

I hate to break it to you, but if you’re not pruning your fruit trees right now, your harvest is going to suffer. Shaping, thinning, heading, and removing dead wood directly affect airflow, light, and fruit production. Dormant season pruning sets the tone for the entire year. #fruittrees #pruningtips #floridagardening #homeorchard

This is the best time to prune fruit trees! Timing is crucial! It’s best to prune a tree while it is still dormant, before it goes into growth stages. This way there is time for the tree to heal and redirect its hormones through the tree and cause new and better growth. Want more pruning videos? PRUNING PEACHES - It’s legitimately scary to prune fruit trees, especially for the first time. What if you do it wrong...did you ruin years of growth? The pruning strategy below is one we’ve used on peaches for 3+ years now and we’ve gotten SO many peaches from this tree we have to give them away: 3 D’s: Remove all dead, diseased, and damaged branches. Easiest place to start, both practically and emotionally 😂 Open Structure: Peaches “want” a open, somewhat airy interior, so remove large branches that “cross through” the interior of the tree. You can also remove any budding branches here, as they’ll be blocked by the outer layer of the tree and will develop poorly. Lowering the Canopy: Unless you’re a giant, you probably want a smaller tree where you can access your fruit. Kevin is 6’4” and still struggles to reach the top of the tree in this video, so he’s cutting it down a touch so he can actually harvest the fruit without needing a ladder or stepstool. 6-8’ is great for a backyard peach tree. Thinning Cuts: Each bud will produce a flower, which will produce a peach. Sometimes you have 12+ buds on one thin branch, which is an offshoot of ANOTHER branch! This is a recipe for disaster as the weight of all of the peaches will snap your branches. You can cut 30-50% of the length off of these branches, which removes those bud sites and “thins” the amount of peaches you’ll have on that branch. Some of these techniques, particularly the last one, seem extreme, BUT will result in a structurally sound tree that produces a ton of high-quality peaches.

Prune these before Spring! 👉🌹🌳🍎🍐🌺 The aim of pruning in winter is mainly to encourage vigour and productivity in fruit trees and flowering plants, and to ensure that shrubs such as buddleja don’t outgrow their space or take over. So here are 5 things you may have in your garden that you should prune back in February, if you already haven’t… Fruit trees and bushes 🌳🍎 To promote healthy fruit production, I remove all decaying and overlapping branches and aim to create a wine glass shape with plenty of airflow in-between. But Leave stone fruit like plums until summer. Wisteria 🌿 Wisteria should ideally be pruned twice a year to promote proper flowering, in summer and winter, at this time of the year I prune back sideshoots to around 2-3 buds. Climbing or bush roses 🌹 I’m training these up an arch, so I leave the thick vigorous stems and cut back the thin weak ones that are out of place, as well as any dead or decaying stems. Rambling roses should be left until late summer though. Clematis 🌺 Group 3 clematis flower in late summer, so I give them a hard prune in February to around 20-30cm above the ground and remove old growth to encourage strong flowering shoots. But do check your clematis group before pruning. Buddleja or butterfly bush 🦋 Even though they often pop up unexpectedly, buddleja are a popular shrub and are loved by butterflies. They are fast growing and can easily take over a space though, so I prune mine back hard to ensure they don’t take over and to promote a display of flowers in summer. So do have any of these in your garden? 😊🌱 #gardeningtips #pruning #gardenmaintenance

How to NOT kill your citrus trees. And actually get some fruit from them. The most common mistake beginner gardeners can make when growing fruit trees is letting the root stock escape. This will mean you won’t end up with whatever fruit you’re trying to grow and will end up producing some completely different fruit. Here’s how you prune your trees to avoid that happening
