Here are 3 simple steps to prune a large fruit tree 👇
1️⃣ Remove over-vigorous growth like water sprouts shooting straight up through the center. If they’re thick, grab a handsaw and take them out.
2️⃣ Use your pruning shears to clear crossing, rubbing, damaged, or inward-growing branches. Step back, take breaks, and get fresh perspective as you go 👀
3️⃣ Reduce the height. I keep my trees at 8 feet so harvesting is easy 🙌 Use loppers to bring tall branches back into reach.
Big trees are fun… until you can’t pick the fruit 😅

NAI learned how to prune apple trees from an experienced orchard farmer, and each winter I stick to a few simple rules.
The ideal time to prune apple and pear trees is during winter, when the trees are dormant.
Start by identifying the new growth, it’s easy to see if you pruned the previous year.
Using sharp secateurs, cut back the top of the new shoot just above an outward-facing bud (the small nodule on the branch). This is where the new branch will develop. Cut as close to the bud as you can.
Always choose buds that point away from the centre of the tree, as you don’t want the new ones growing inward.
Get rid from any crossing branches.
Pruning is great especially for dwarf tree varieties to create better shape and maximise yield.
