Ele pertence ao grupo de músculos internos do quadril. O nome ‘psoas’ possui origem grega, e significa ‘músculo do lombo’. . O psoas maior é um músculo longo, localizado imediatamente lateral à coluna vertebral. . As fibras do psoas maior se estendem inferolateralmente através da pequena pelve em direção à coxa. Elas passam ao longo da margem pélvica e inferiormente ao ligamento inguinal em direção à sua inserção única na coxa anterior. Ao longo de seu trajeto as fibras mais laterais do psoas maior se unem com fibras do músculo ilíaco para formar o músculo iliopsoas. O iliopsoas passa profundamente ao ligamento inguinal e anterior à cápsula articular do quadril para se inserir no trocânter menor do fêmur. .
