MAPsyopus - “The White Light” live circa 2004
Psyopus were a mathcore band from Rochester, New York. They released 3 studio albums: “Ideas of Reference” (2005) via Black Market Activities, and “Our Puzzling Encounters Considered” (2007) and “Odd Senses” (2009) via Metal Blade Records. The band were well known for the virtuosic playing of guitarist of Chris Arp, who many consider to represent the pinnacle of this style. Formed in 2002, the band underwent many lineup changes, with Arp being the only the original member for its entire duration. Among its rotating cast of members were drummer Jason Bauers (Behold the Arctopus), drummer Lee Fisher (Fawn Limbs, Commit Suicide), bassist Travis Morgan (Brain Drill, Atheist), and drummer Jon Cole (Drowingman). The band went on hiatus in 2010, with Arp focusing on other musical pursuits, such as performing with the likes of Hank Williams III in Assjack and his “Exploding Fingers” guitar instructional booklet. Although a reunion has been hinted at numerous times, nothing has yet to come to fruition, but Arp has in recent months started a YouTube channel showcasing his songwriting process with what were potentially to become Psyopus songs.
