When we think raptors we often think of them as fierce predators of the skies. But have you ever noticed how raptors can encapsulate that majesty from their side view, but look especially goofy from the front?? I call it the beak-on view. In this case, the beak-on views actually helped us identify this species when we caught this raptor in Brazil. Originally we thought it might have been a Bicolored Hawk, a neotropical raptor known for its gray back and rufous pants. But on closer inspection we actually saw that the upper part of the bill has a double notch, a classic characteristic of some of the neotropical Haprpagus kites, such as the aptly named Double-toothed Kite. Additionally we noticed the head and bill shape were more fitting for a kite instead of hawk. The bird also had shorter legs and a very faint black line down the throat. So in the end we called this bird a Rufous-thighed Kite. These raptors, like many neotropical raptors, are poorly studied and we’re still learning a lot about their basic life history. Even figuring out where they occur has been a work in progress since they can clearly be mistaken for other raptor species, even in the hand! But we do know they are migratory, breeding in South Eastern Atlantic forests of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, then migrating to north to Amazonia and the Guianas. Given their small size, they typically feed in insects and small reptiles, but they have even been observed attending any swarms! We were very fortunate to catch this raptor as part of the Bird Banding and Molt Analysis (BBMA) course. Seus ossos são sólidos e densos, funcionando como um lastro natural que o impede de flutuar e permite que ele caminhe no fundo de rios, mesmo contra a correnteza. A adaptação não para aí. Seus olhos possuem um pálpebra extra transparente, que atua como uma proteção subaquática, e músculos capazes de ajustar instantaneamente o cristalino, corrigindo a refração da água. Assim, o animal alterna entre visão aérea e submersa com extrema precisão.
